Linguistics at ANU is internationally acclaimed in both research and teaching. Linguists at
ANU conduct research that is helping to shape the field, seen for example in international rankings — ANU was ranked as the top university in Australia for Linguistics in the 2021 QS rankings (and 22nd in the world) — and in the large number of Fellows of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (nine) and the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (three). Our research underpins a vibrant undergraduate teaching program and fosters a thriving community of undergraduate and graduate students.

The program has close ties with other areas of strength at ANU, in particular in languages. ANU teaches the largest number of languages of any university in Australia, and has strong commitment to Australian Indigenous languages, and to Indigenous scholars of Australia and the region. Linguistics is housed in two areas, the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics (College of Arts and Social Sciences) and the School of Culture, History and Language (College of Asia and the Pacific), and is affiliated with several research centres, including the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language , the Institute for Communication in Health Care , the Australian National Dictionary Centre , and the newly formed Evolution of Cultural Diversity Initiative .

Position overview

The ANU School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics seeks to appoint an Associate Professor/Professor of Linguistics to contribute to and enhance an ambitious, future-focused program. The appointee will be responsible for undertaking and fostering world-leading, high-impact research, including actively seeking and securing external funding to support major collaborative research initiatives. They will be an outstanding scholar whose research plays a role in shaping the future direction of language sciences, and who will lead this endeavour at the ANU.

Field of research is open, but we emphasise a focus on empirical research (fieldwork, corpus-, or lab-based), an interest in languages of the region, and demonstrated experience in both community engagement and in making connections with other disciplines.

The successful candidate will undertake leadership roles in the discipline of Linguistics, in the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics and in the College of Arts and Social Sciences, contributing cooperatively to the overall intellectual life and collegial workings of the discipline, School, College and University.
