About the opportunity

The School of Mathematics and Statistics is one of the largest mathematical sciences schools in Australia and is world-renowned for its research in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and mathematical statistics. The school attracts a strong body of excellent students as well as a large number of outstanding researchers, many of whom hold Fellowships and grants.

We are seeking to appoint a Mathematician who is internationally recognized as a leading academic in the area of Computational Algebra. The successful candidate will combine a research track record of impactful publications and success in competitive research grants with a solid track record of teaching and experience in supervising higher degree research students.


About you

The successful applicant will take a leadership role in the Computational Algebra group in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Sydney. This group is responsible for maintaining and developing the Magma software package, one of the leading computational algebra tools for computations in algebra, number theory, algebraic geometry, and algebraic combinatorics, which has become an essential part of the working lives of mathematicians around the world. The successful applicant will take a leadership role in managing the group and the Magma software within the University, acting as the supervisor of members of the group and working in close cooperation with founding director Professor John Cannon.


Term and remuneration

This will be a continuing appointment. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
