The Opportunity

The School of Law, Society & Criminology in the Faculty of Law & Justice is seeking an Associate Professor/ Professor to contribute to the School’s teaching programs, particularly the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, as well as the Faculty’s research and engagement activities. The appointee is expected to develop and maintain a strong program of individual research and to lead initiatives that align with the UNSW Criminology and Criminal Justice Program Values Statement and the strategic priorities of the Centre for Crime, Law & Justice.

Accountabilities

Specific accountabilities for this role include.

Associate Professor (Level D):

  • Conduct research of high quality and emerging international impact, including attainment of competitive government and industry research funding, publication of outcomes in high quality research outlets and demonstrated social engagement and impact.
  • Play a significant role in the leadership of research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research group or team.
  • Provide leadership of the School’s teaching and learning activities through initiation of new course materials and flexible approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Promote high quality learning and teaching, develop and teach undergraduate, postgraduate, and/or research courses in the area of criminology and criminal justice that align with the UNSW Criminology and Criminal Justice Program Values Statement.
  • High quality supervision of honours and postgraduate research projects.
  • Provide leadership in developing significant productive relationships and engagement with industry and the community.
  • Work collaboratively with peers across the Faculty and UNSW in all aspects of academic endeavour and contribute to mentoring of other staff.
  • High level contribution to broad administrative functions in the School and Faculty, course coordination, research centre leadership, attending departmental and/or faculty meetings, involvement in Open days and recruitment activities and play a major role in planning and/or committee work or other duties as requested by the Head of School.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct .
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Professor (Level E) - In addition to the above:

  • Maintain a distinguished program of research that makes an internationally recognised contribution to the discipline
  • Take a leadership role in the design, development and review of education activities and resources, assessment and feedback at the program level, particularly for the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
  • Develop and maintain extensive links nationally and internationally within the discipline, industry, or profession that makes a measurable positive contribution to research, curriculum, student employability and industry professional development requirements.
  • Lead collaborations to secure internal and/or external education funding.
  • Chair and contribute to School, Faculty, University and sector-wide committees, working groups and projects as well as other administrative functions as required.
  • Contribute to national and international dialogues in research, teaching and learning, advancing cooperation, partnership and informing best practice in the sector.

Skills and Experience

Associate Professor (Level D):

  • A PhD in Criminology or a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience, with expertise in critical criminology and/or socio-legal approaches to scholarship.
  • A leading scholar with capacity to provide expertise and academic leadership and mentoring to colleagues, including early career academics.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication, relationship building and negotiation skills.
  • Strong research publications record and the capacity to attain competitive research grants.
  • Capacity to contribute to the leadership of research centres, such as the UNSW Centre for Crime, Law and Justice
  • Demonstrated experience in and/or capacity to contribute to the leadership of teaching and learning design, development and delivery in the areas of criminology, criminal justice and criminal law.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry or experience of work-integrated learning in the justice sector.
  • Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • A capacity to build and maintain effective partnerships with government, community and/or other external organisations to achieve social impact and support the mission and objectives of the Faculty and of the University.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training

Professor (Level E)- In addition to the above:

  • Demonstrated substantial experience of course, program and curriculum development at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Evidence of a distinguished program of research that has made an internationally recognised contribution to the discipline.
  • Demonstrated capacity to attract internal and external funding to support educational initiatives.
  • A demonstrated ability to work and influence across disciplines, faculties, institutions, industry and professional accreditation bodies.
  • Evidence of being an inspirational role model for other academics seeking mentoring, guidance, advice and support in educational, research and social engagement activities.
