The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a Associate Professor of Practice

The successful applicant will be based in the School of Geosciences and work primarily with the Sydney Policy Lab to foster creative and sustainable community partnerships that address complex issues in society working with people across the whole of the University.

The University of Sydney recognises that world-class research is increasingly conducted in collaboration between academic and non-academic partners. This position is designed to help the University lead this work as it obtains to the biggest public policy challenges of our day. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of community engagement and leadership in both academic and non-academic settings and be able to foster creative and sustainable partnerships across sectors. They will ideally have management or leadership experience outside academia and show an ability to translate academic findings to non-academic audiences. Ideally, they will also have an understanding of different approaches to collaborative practice, and experience in applying them and teaching others how to critically use them. A track record of attracting and managing external philanthropic, organisational sponsorship or other grant support is also strongly desirable.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • develop and lead creative collaborative research partnerships that connect University researchers with groups across civil society, public service, public commentators, philanthropy and industry

  • help secure external funding for initiatives and manage philanthropic and other grants supporting these collaborative research projects

  • maintain and build a reputation for excellence in the profession, including contributing to scholarly debate and translating findings to broad audiences working through various media including podcasts, blogs, radio, and television appearances and with affected communities

  • play a leadership role in the Sydney Policy Lab team, teaching the principles and practice of community engagement and supporting the application of those practices in the Lab’s research and policy projects

  • provide leadership with significant impact on the School of Geosciences, Faculty of Science, the MDI program, and broader University community in teaching, teaching innovation or curriculum development and/or research training and supervision

  • provide mentoring and guidance to academics within the School and broader University community, including mentoring others to academic success.

The School of Geosciences has a strong reputation for the quality of its research and teaching in human and physical geography, environmental studies, marine science, and geology and geophysics. We tackle key issues facing society including climate change, resource management and sustainability.

About you

  • a PhD in the field of human geography/ community organising/ civil society movements/ collaborative and participatory research methods/ collaborative policymaking/ advocacy

  • successful track record of building coalitions of diverse partners for research and social innovation, especially with those who are underrepresented and/or who do not usually engage with the University or policymaking

  • a wide network of established relationships with key partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the discipline and the University

  • reputation as a leading authority and skilled practice figure in the profession, including international experience and presence

  • well-established and sustained success in innovation and/or thought leadership within the profession, both in and outside the University

  • significant experience in people leadership and management, including demonstrated excellence in supervising or mentoring others to success

  • demonstrated success integrating and applying theoretical concepts and translating this to non-academic audiences throughout various mediums, to advance professional practice

  • a demonstrated capacity to develop the skills and practice of collaborative community engaged research across the University, together with a track record of content development and research-based teaching including for online delivery.

The commencement level will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, and knowledge.
