About the team  

The School of Allied Health provides teaching and undertakes research in fields of Allied Health and Social Work and Social Policy (SWSP). The SWSP Discipline exists within Allied Health along with Pharmacy, Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, Optometry and Health Professions Education.  All are engaged in teaching, with a major focus on postgraduate programmes leading to a professional qualification.

The flagship degree of the Discipline of Social Work and Social Policy is the Master of Social Work (Qualifying) program.  This 2-year postgraduate degree develops social workers who support individuals, families, groups, organisations and communities experiencing complex and diverse challenges and issues.

About the opportunity  

You will be responsible to the Head of School to provide leadership to the team and foster excellence in Social Work and Social Policy education, research and community engagement. You will be motivated to teach, develop a significant research portfolio within the field and contribute to the academic environment of the School and UWA generally. In addition, you will carry the role of Head of Discipline for an initial period of 2 years. As Head of Discipline, you will provide leadership of the Discipline’s operational and strategic plans. This will require an established track record in education, research and administration in the field of social work.

Reporting to the Head of the School of Allied Health, you will play an important role in the Discipline’s leadership team through the promotion of co-ordinated strategic academic development. You will be expected to work in accordance with the University’s policies, procedures and values, promoting academic excellence through integrity, inclusiveness, professionalism and community engagement.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate: 

  • Registered, or eligible for registration with the Australian Association of Social Workers as a Social Worker
  • A PhD or equivalent higher qualification
  • Extensive knowledge of and teaching experience in Social Work in a university environment
  • Proven ability for successful research student supervision
  • Proven ability to lead academic education programs using contemporary teaching methods
  • Proven experience in undertaking research and the publication of articles, policies and protocols in social work
  • Excellence in leadership and supervision of research in a university environment
  • Excellence in Leadership in management and organisational skills.
  • Evidence of a high level of interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication, and demonstrated ability to relate well to staff and students at all levels
