Why Your Role Matters:
The Associate Lecturer in Strategic & Defence Studies supports the research and teaching activities of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Position will be involved in advancing the School’s international profile by conducting scholarly research, contributing to the supervision of research students, and undertake range of teaching duties. The position will also contribute to the effective functioning of the School by undertaking a range of other administrative duties. The role of Associate Lecturer in Strategic & Defence Studies reports to the Head of School. 

Responsibilities:

  • A Level A academic is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the institution particularly at undergraduate and graduate diploma level and to carry out activities to develop their scholarly, research and/or professional expertise relevant to the profession or discipline.
  • Specific duties required of a Level A academic may include:
    • The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and/or studio sessions.
    • The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars provided that skills and experience demonstrate this capacity.
    • The conduct of research.
    • Involvement in professional activity.
    • Consultation with students.
    • Marking and assessment primarily connected with subjects in which the academic teaches.
  • A Level A academic will work with support and direction from academics classified at Level B and above and with an increasing degree of autonomy as the academic gains in skill and experience. They will not be required to teach primarily in subjects which are offered only at Masters level or above. The most complex levels of subject coordination will be carried out by an academic at level B and above.

Who You Are: 

  • A degree in a related discipline that is relevant to contributing to the Position Summary, with a proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments. A PhD or candidate in a related discipline will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and an emerging ability to undertake learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches to deliver courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level both face to face and online.
  • Evidence of a commitment to teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills appropriate for interacting effectively with team members, collaborators and colleagues across the Faculty, University and externally.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships with evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and the ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
