  • Full time ongoing position.
  • Salary range: Level A: $72,780 - $97,946 p.a or Level B: $102,983 - $121,864 p.a. plus 17% superannuation.

The Law School comprises over fifty scholars engaged in teaching and research in law, socio-legal studies and criminology. Faculty have been drawn from top universities around the world including Australia, North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Africa and have broad ranging expertise delivering quality teaching programs.

Scholars within the Law School are engaged in a diverse range of legal and socio-legal research areas covering public, private, international and domestic law, as well as law and society, justice studies and criminology. Our research projects are focused on producing valuable scholarship with real-world impact through a variety of written outputs (books, journal articles, research reports, submissions) as well as through conferences, public lectures, workshops and seminars.

Indigenisation of the Juris Doctor

In 2018, the UWA Law School launched its Indigenisation of the Juris Doctor project. Through this project, the UWA Law School is incorporating Indigenous cultures, knowledges and perspectives throughout Juris Doctor degree.

This project is responding to the now widely recognised need to meaningfully incorporate Indigenous knowledges into the Australian law curriculum. At the same time, it aligns with the importance of understanding Indigenous peoples and knowledges that is fast being embedded into Australian workplaces through Indigenous engagement strategies such as Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs). 

The Indigenisation of the Juris Doctor  project will have immense benefits for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous law students, and will better equip UWA Law graduates to succeed in their chosen careers.

About the opportunity

If selected as the successful appointee, you will contribute to the Law School’s teaching programs, including its flagship Juris Doctor. In particular, you will be expected to contribute to leading the Law School’s Indigenisation of the JD project . 

You will also be expected to research, undertake research engagement activities and begin to develop a research profile appropriate for an academic in your field of expertise and at your level of appointment.

In addition, you will be required to contribute, both internally and externally, to the Law School and broader University and external community.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Completion of a professional Law degree (Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor).
  • Completion of or enrolment a postgraduate study in Law (desirable for Level B).
  • Progress towards or willingness to enrol in PhD, or equivalent, in Law.
  • Experience and/or expertise in Indigenous legal issues.
  • Experience in teaching Law (for Level B).
  • A understanding of Indigenous cultures, knowledges and perspectives.
  • An emerging research profile or willingness to develop a research profile in area of expertise.
  • The ability to relate well to staff and students at all levels.
  • Evidence of a commitment to equity and diversity.
  • The ability to liaise and effectively communicate both in writing and orally to a wide range of audiences, including students, colleagues, relevant sections of nthe community, professional bodies, government departments and other external organisations.
  • Evidence of high level interpersonal skills.
