The Associate Director, Student Learning Support Service is a Teaching Specialist (Academic) position with a primary focus on teaching and teaching-related activities and the leadership of the University’s Student Learning Support Service, and has an important role to play in the University’s achievement of its strategic plan, Making a Difference: The 2025 Agenda.

The Associate Director will provide outstanding leadership of academic and professional staff in the Student Learning Support Service to ensure that students from across the University develop English language, literacy, numeracy, academic study and writing skills necessary for academic success. The Associate Director will lead innovation in design and delivery of Student Learning Support for all students, including those from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds, and those who are studying at different locations or in different modes.
The position will work collaboratively with the other Associate Directors in the Centre of Innovation of Learning and Teaching to ensure the University’s academic programs and academic support for staff and students is characterised by innovation and excellence with a paramount focus on student success.

Key Position Responsibilities

This position’s primary focus is to provide outstanding leadership of the Student Learning Support Service, its staff and the services it provides to enhance the academic skills of students of the University to participate in their learning. It involves leadership of teaching and teaching-related duties including the creation, delivery and continuous quality improvement of support materials and programs. It includes (but is not limited to): leadership and supervision of academic and professional staff to develop high quality teaching and learning support informed by approaches that enhance the student experience; design and review of teaching and learning support; and delivery innovation utilising advancements in education technologies.

The position is also expected to make a contribution to high impact and high-quality university, professional and community service. The position does not include making a research contribution.

Teaching:

  • Provide outstanding leadership to professional and academic staff involved in academic learning support for undergraduate and postgraduate students from across the University.

  • Lead development and evaluation of materials which support learning of students, including International students and students from Culturally And Linguistically Diverse backgrounds.

  • Coordinate delivery of, and conduct, lectures, workshops or other learning activities for students to enhance their learning.

  • Develop and oversee implementation of an evaluation framework for the Student Learning Support Service to ensure effective and efficient service delivery which achieves successful outcomes for students.

  • Lead the design, implementation and evaluation of effective use of innovations and technologies in Student Learning Support.

University, Professional and Service:

  • Effectively manage the resources of Student Learning Support Service to deliver effective student outcome within budget.

  • Provide high impact and high-quality service contributions to CILT and the University by participating and leading University-wide committees and working parties.

  • Maintain and further professional knowledge relevant to student learning support through scholarship and professional development.

  • Engage in activities within a relevant external professional domain such as professional associations, conferences and workshops, and within a wider community context at local, national or international level.

  • Undertake any other duties as directed by the supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • Completion of a PhD or EdD or equivalent qualification in a relevant field.

  • Recognition of academic standing at a national or international level in a relevant field.

  • Evidence of significant and sustained excellence in student learning support at a university level with evidence of a distinguished personal contribution.

  • Evidence of significant experience and sustained excellence in delivery of teaching with evidence of a distinguished personal contribution.

  • Evidence of leadership in significant innovation in Learning and Teaching.

  • Evidence of significant, successful and sustained leadership in the development, delivery and evaluation of student learning support innovations.

  • Evidence of a strong understanding and application of pedagogical theory and contemporary educational practice relevant to student learning support.

  • Evidence of sustained capability of providing a distinguished contribution to scholarship of student learning support through participation in professional development in higher education teaching.

  • Evidence of successful leadership of university courses and/or university-wide programs.

  • Evidence of ability to lead a team of academics and support the team's development of excellence in student learning support.

  • A demonstrated track record of establishing effective collaborations across the University and with external organisations.

  • Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills, including achievement of successful outcomes through negotiation and the establishment and maintenance of relationships with senior staff, with students and with external organisations.

  • Evidence of upholding the values and ethos of the University.

  • Evidence of significant leadership of development and delivery of learning support for international students (Desirable) .

Prescribed Conditions for Employment

It is a requirement of this position that the incumbent maintain a current Working With Children Check which is satisfactory to the University in accordance with the Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016 (SA).
