Overview of the School and opportunity
ECU’s School of Arts and Humanities is at the start of an exciting period of innovation, with ambitious goals for excellence in research, teaching and engagement aligned with ECU’s strategic vision. At this time, we seek to appoint an outstanding academic to serve as Associate Dean Psychology & Social Sciences, one of four new associate dean appointments currently being made in the School. These appointees will work with the new Executive Dean Professor Matthew Allen, to form a high-achieving senior academic leadership team, enabling the School to sustain a strong culture of scholarly excellence and socially just inclusion, as well as setting and achieving the School’s strategic objectives.

The School is one of the largest in the university, spanning diverse professional and academic disciplines including Art and Design, Criminology, Media and Communication, Humanities, Psychology and Counselling, Social Sciences, and Social and Youth Work. The School operates across three campuses, with more than 100 academic and professional staff, and has a strong online education presence. The diversity of the School is a strength, enabling interdisciplinary innovation, a sustainable financial platform, and many opportunities for collaborations with industry and community.

Arts and Humanities will be part of ECU’s move to the visionary City Campus in the Perth CBD in 2025. It is an important partner in research and teaching in regional Western Australia, including being a part of the new University Department of Rural Health. It is involved in several ARC-funded research projects and contributes to University Strategic Research initiatives including the Centre for People, Place, & Planet. Our courses consistently outperform national averages in student satisfaction and we were Australia’s top public university for teaching quality in 2020 (QILT 2020).

We are seeking applications from enterprising, team-oriented, and strategic-minded academic leaders to join the school from 2023 onwards and contribute to its success while developing their own leadership careers. If successful, you will be appointed to a continuing academic position as Professor or Associate Professor within the School. You will serve an initial term of three years as Associate Dean (with the opportunity for a further three-year term). The Associate Dean role will involve a commitment of between 3 and 4 days’ a week with the remainder of time devoted to research and scholarship. Academic Study Leave is available upon completion of the term as Associate Dean.

The Associate Dean Psychology & Social Sciences will be part of the School Executive and will join three other associate deans, for which we are now also recruiting. These roles are the Associate Dean Research, Associate Dean Teaching and Learning, and Associate Dean Creative Humanities. The role of Associate Dean Psychology & Social Sciences
As Associate Dean Psychology & Social Sciences you will be a member of the School’s Executive and will have responsibility for leading the group of academic disciplines constituted by our teaching and research programs in Children and Family Studies, Counselling, Criminology and Justice, Human Services and Community Work, Psychology (including Clinical Psychology), Social Work and Youth Work. You will lead colleagues in these disciplines to define and develop Psychology & Social Sciences as a coherent and distinctive area of contemporary scholarship, with a strong emphasis on applied and professional knowledge work that is underpinned by the academic domains of psychology and social sciences.

You will have significant delegated authority to lead the academic staff working in Psychology & Social Sciences. You will achieve success by developing a highly talented academic workforce that seeks excellence in research and teaching, and thrives in a collaborative scholarly environment. You will also focus on building internal and external relationships that drive future growth in Psychology & Social Sciences. As well as your primary disciplinary responsibility, you will be part of the shared strategic leadership of the School, and you will make valuable contributions to all aspects of School performance. Significantly you will help develop new models for effective and agile operational leadership that support senior leaders and provide career opportunities for future leaders. You will work with the Executive Dean and Associate Dean Creative Humanities to design new organisational approaches to take best advantage of the diverse disciplines within the School.

The successful candidate for this role
To be successful, you will have a deep knowledge of contemporary higher education relevant to Psychology & Social Sciences and be skilled in working collegially within a university and beyond. We equally value your comprehensive strategic leadership and your ability to contribute to sustained scholarly excellence in your continuing professorial role. You will already be working in higher education as an experienced Senior Lecturer or above.

Benefits and remuneration
The successful applicant will be appointed to a full-time, continuing position as either Associate Professor or Professor (depending on prior level of achievement). The concurrent fixed-term role of Associate Dean Psychology & Social Sciences (initial term of three years) will attract additional remuneration. A generous relocation allowance is available to enable a successful applicant to move from elsewhere in Australia to Perth. ECU supports a work/life balance for staff.
