About the team

The University of Western Australia (UWA) Medical School is the largest and longest established medical school in Western Australia. It delivers a 4-year post-graduate MD course to local, national and international students. The School also has substantial and successful research programs across most disciplines in the medical sector.

Together with our key partner, the University of Arizona (UA), UWA Medical School is developing an innovative medical degree (Global MD) to run alongside its existing world-class offerings. Students undertaking the Global MD will complete 2-years of study in Western Australia and a further 2-years in Arizona.

As the first transnational medical degree to be offered in Western Australia (WA), UWA will be at the forefront of developing and implementing innovative medical education opportunities on a global scale.

About the opportunity

As Associate Dean (Indigenous), you will be responsible for developing a world-leading Indigenous Medical curriculum, accreditation, and academic leadership of the proposed Global MD program.

You will work collaboratively with the Assistant Vice President for Indigenous Affairs who is based at UArizona in Tucson, Arizona, USA.  Together, you will deliver excellent outcomes across all aspects of the Global MD program, including Indigenous Medical curriculum development, course accreditation, Indigenous staffing, Indigenous student support, Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori community engagement.

In conjunction with the Dean and Global MD Executive, the appointee will deliver the Global MD’s strategic priorities and operational management.  This position is an exciting opportunity to lead the establishment of a new medical degree and Western Australia’s first medical course delivered globally. The successful candidate would be a member of the Global MD Executive team and relevant course leadership committees.

Applicants with a medical qualification with current registration to practice within Australia and related clinical experience will be desirable.

To be considered for this opportunity, you will demonstrate:

  • A relevant Masters level or higher qualification from Health or Education fields
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging and working with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and organisations
  • A proven track record of demonstrating excellence in medical student teaching, learning, assessment, and support of students.
  • Experience with the design and implementation of Indigenous medical curricula, including embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems, community engagement and accreditation.
  • Experience with improving access, participation and support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
  • Excellent organisational, problem solving, communication and negotiation skills with multiple and diverse stakeholders including Indigenous community leaders, international partners, external bodies, committees, academic and professional staff and students.
  • National recognition of significant contribution and commitment to Indigenous Education.
  • Commitment to the values of equity and diversity, demonstrated understanding of the diverse nature of the Global MD community, and a willingness to work with staff, students and visitors from a wide range of backgrounds.
