As an
Assistant Animal Technician, Washroom, you will:

  • Clean animal enclosures (cages, pens, tanks etc.) thoroughly by sanitising and disinfecting to prevent the spread of disease, following established protocols and schedules.
  • Ensure closures are maintained to meet the specific needs of different animals, including ensuring compliance with all relevant safety and animal welfare regulations, keeping accurate records of cleaning and sanitisation activities and reporting any health and safety concerns to supervisory staff.
  • Collect, dispose of and manage animal waste in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines and maintain cleanliness in designated waste disposal areas.
  • Assist with general maintenance tasks, such as repairing and maintaining washroom and cleaning equipment, and report any maintenance issues or repairs needed promptly.
  • Under broad direction, maintain and care for animals by ensuring that they are observed on a daily basis to assess health, ecological conditions, social environment and ensure clean food, water and an enriched environment is provided daily.
  • Collaborate with other animal care staff to ensure the smooth operation of facilities.
  • Assist in training new staff members on cleaning protocols and procedures.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Completion of Diploma level qualifications in Applied Science, Animal Technology or similar with relevant work experience or a certificate level qualification with post certificate relevant work experience;
  • Completion of a Post-Trades Certificate or Advanced Certificate and extensive relevant experience and on the job training; or
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Experience in the care of animals e.g. aquatic, avian, wildlife and rodent species
  • Knowledge of animal use in research and teaching in a broad range of disciplines and proven ability to successfully work within a high performing research team.
