The Assistant Accountant supports the University Financials function with the operational delivery of university wide accounting services, including business assets, revenue recognition, lease accounting, taxation, cash management, investment management and other general ledger accounting services, to internal and external customers to ensure accounting services are delivered in line with key deadlines across the University.  This position applies and complies with accounting standards, taxation regulations, legislation and specific organisational policies, standards and protocols, and implement effective statutory and other external reporting requirements.

The Assistant Accountant also contributes to the production of a diverse range of management and financial reports and prepares balance sheet reconciliations and monthly journals to ensure they are accurate, timely and in line with the relevant accounting standards and University financial policies.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and prioritising work and critical activities appropriately and recognising barriers to achieving outcomes, finding effective ways to deal with them and evaluates progress
  • Building new and productive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including promoting awareness of policies and accounting standard requirements with relevant customers and stakeholders
  • Communicating with confidence using examples and the most appropriate influencing technique for a given situation to increase understanding and support
  • Striving for excellence and consulting regularly with clients to clarify who requires the information, the purpose for which it is required, criteria for success and where and when advice and recommendation is required
  • Seeking feedback from customers regarding their satisfaction and perspective with services received, and respond to feedback with openness and transparency and seek to identify ways to better service the customer
  • Supporting and contributing to the annual VAGO external audit to ensure timelines and information needs are met
  • Contributing to ensuring that appropriate internal controls are in place, good management of accounting practices, all accounting policies and procedures are developed and effectively

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • A Bachelor degree in accounting, finance or other similar discipline with subsequent relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger, taxation and basic accounting principles
