  • 2 x full-time, 3 year fixed term opportunities. Located on the Camperdown Campus
  • 0.8 FTE Data Hub Statistician in the Charles Perkins Centre Data Hub and 0.2 FTE teaching in the School of Mathematics and Statistics
  • Base Salary, Level A/B $105,350 - $118,390 + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

We are currently seeking to appoint an Applied Statistician / Lecturer and an Applied Statistician / Associate Lecturer to work in the Data Hub at the Charles Perkins Centre (CPC) at the University of Sydney. The Data Hub is a new initiative of the CPC to increase capacity in data-intensive research with direct translational impact in biomedical and metabolomics health research. The Data Hub will enable context-specific data analysis on collaborative projects. In addition to working as a data statistician or data analyst, both positions are required to teach one day per week for the School of Mathematics and Statistics. One of the positions will also be required to manage the administration of the Data's Hub's services.

The Charles Perkins Centre is a world leader in its unique approach to bringing together and aligning the University of Sydney's many disciplines to find solutions to and advance our knowledge and understanding of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease and related conditions, their causes and societal impacts. This creative approach aligns depths and strengths to find solutions to the growing pandemic of metabolic disease.

The successful applicant will also be part of the Sydney Precision Data Science Centre and School of Mathematics and Statistics . We have a strong team working on various aspects of applied statistics and bioinformatics research.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • work independently and as part of a team to conduct data analysis on large-scale international biomedical datasets
  • support the establishment of capacity in relationship to Global Biobank data including but not limiting to UK Biobank
  • contribute to publishing research papers in international peer-reviewed journals mentor undergraduate students and casual analysts
  • undertake independent teaching in applied statistics
  • manage administration of data hub services.

About you

  • a strong statistical bioinformatics or statistical genetics background
  • experience with high-dimensional data statistical analysis
  • demonstrated ability to conduct research / scholarly activities under limited supervision and as part of a multidisciplinary research team
  • good organisational and administrative skills with attention to detail
  • superior computer programming or software development skills
  • good communication skills (both written and oral)
  • potential to design and engage in high-quality teaching and learning experiences (in person and online.

Applicants who demonstrate the following desirable criteria will be highly regarded:

  • experience with processing or performing initial data analysis on recent platforms of omics data such as next generation sequencing or mass spectrometry
  • experience to guide application for large scale data bank
  • experience in analysing high-dimensional regression models and feature selection
  • experience with statistics or biomedical data science consulting
  • experience teaching applied statistical methods to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students
  • ability to assist researchers from other disciplines as well as work with PhD students within the statistics bioinformatics research group
  • comprehensive experience of common online bioinformatics software and databases such as PRIDE, UniProt, GenBank or BLAST etc
  • strong general IT skills, including familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and HPC server.
