About the opportunity 

 

The Animal Technician will provide and oversee the day-to-day care for animals including the husbandry, health and welfare, facility maintenance and record keeping. You will have a primary responsibility for a nominated animal facility (or section of a large facility) but with sufficient skills and flexibility to perform a similar role in other facilities if required. The Animal Technician actively participates in the implementation of relevant policies and procedures to ensure appropriate animal welfare standards and regulatory compliance in day-to-day operations, and to support efficient operation. Provision of routine inspections on weekends and delivery of essential animal husbandry tasks on public holidays may be required.  

 

Laboratory Animal Services (LAS) is responsible for the care, breeding and supply of animals used for research. The department also has responsibilities for related activities such as overseeing the maintenance of animal facilities and aspects of regulatory compliance. Operating within a highly regulated environment, the staff of LAS are committed to high animal welfare standards while supporting the University’s biomedical research program through efficient delivery of services.  

 

Your key responsibilities will be to: 

 

  • perform routine and some more complex animal care, breeding and technical tasks to a high standard including all aspects of animal husbandry, record keeping and health monitoring 

  • maintain the workplace, ensuring that the research requirements are met effectively and supervise the work of subordinate animal care staff within the facility to ensure appropriate standards of animal care and client service 

  • perform cleaning duties and ensure the animal facilities are compliant with Workplace Health and Safety requirements and regulatory requirements 

  • participate in maintaining regulatory compliance in the areas of animal welfare (DPI, AEC requirements) and Australian Quarantine and gene technology (OGTR, IBC/Biosafety requirements). 

 

About you 

 

  • experience with animal handling and animal care skills of a very high standard, especially in relation to common laboratory species and experience with SPF principles  

  • experience in managing rodent breeding colonies

  • a demonstrated commitment to animal welfare and to the use of animals in research conducted in accordance with the NSW Animal Research Act and a practical understanding of the outcomes sought by relevant regulatory codes 

  • ability to recognise and initiate responses to health problems in animals 

  • strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

  • ability to work as part of a team but also without direct supervision and flexibility to work in any of Laboratory Animal Services’ facilities (including availability to work additional hours or to participate in a weekend roster as required)  

  • capability to complete tasks within a reasonable timeframe, appropriate attention to detail, and ability to help maintain a clean and safe workplace.
