About the position

The positions work closely with Senior Learning Librarians and Learning Librarians to systematically promote, develop, deliver and review Library academic skills programs, services and resources both within and alongside curriculums. They liaise with academic staff in designated disciplines to build ongoing relationships and discipline knowledge. They also liaise with professional staff beyond the Library, to ensure that academic skills services meet the needs of all students. Academic Skills and Language Advisors work in flexible, cross-campus and cross-functional teams, which support students in their development of digital, information and academic literacies. The teams drive continuous improvement, relevance, and accessibility within Library frameworks and strategy, providing a seamless service to all student cohorts with a focus on diversity and inclusion within these cohorts. Academic Skills and Language Advisors oversee La Trobe’s Peer Learning Advisors (PLAs), students employed to deliver peer academic skills support.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have

  • Postgraduate qualifications in Education, TESOL or a related field, together with sound knowledge of academic skills required for successful tertiary study
  • Experience in teaching and advising academic skills at university level, including high-level writing across a range of disciplines and genres
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues faced by students undertaking tertiary study at all levels
  • Ability to apply theoretical knowledge to developing innovative practices or methodologies to engage, teach and advise students
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with academic and professional staff, and to accept responsibility for outcomes
  • Outstanding teamwork, including evidence of successful team collaboration, leading to excellent learning experiences for students
  • Demonstrated competence to teach with confidence using online platforms, technologies and digital content
  • Knowledge and/or experience in supporting academic and language skills for Law School is desirable (but not compulsory)
