Your new role

We are seeking a dedicated individual to fill a vital role within our School, providing essential support to facilitate cultural awareness in Aboriginal research and academia.
The School of Population Health has the greatest intake of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Students in the Faculty of Health Sciences, hence we are keen to appoint an Indigenous staff member who is willing and able to support our Indigenous students in their learning endeavours. In addition to providing support to our Indigenous student cohort and cultural advice towards implementing the Indigenous Cultural Capability Framework, you will be contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and play a central role in progressing the ongoing Indigenisation of our course curricula in recognising Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander perspectives, in ways of knowing, being and doing.
The School of Population Health offers a variety of courses, ranging from Psychology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Health Economics and Data Analytics, Health and Safely and Environment and Health Promotion. We seek a candidate with a scientific background in any of these disciplines to contribute to the teaching program of the school. As a preferred candidate, you will have a growing or established research program in an area that is consistent with your research background.
This role is part of a progressive and supportive team. You will be part of a team, will work together with other Indigenous academics in the School, as well as the Faculty Dean Indigenous Engagement and their teams.

Responsibilities (but not limited to):

  • Contribute to the development of curriculum and assessment with a strong emphasis on Aboriginal health.
  • Support cultural orientation and safety initiatives within the School, ensuring adherence to high standards of behaviour and knowledge.
  • Participate in teaching activities, providing mentorship and guidance to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.
  • Provide cultural awareness and training to all staff within the School.
  • Engage in research activities, either independently or as a leader.
Selection Criteria:
  • A doctoral qualification for appointments at higher levels of seniority.   • Strong understanding of the health issues facing Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, including other social factors.
  • Experience in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community engagement, recognising the challenges often faced in sensitive and complex cultural situations.
  • Proven high-level teaching skills with a demonstrated reflective approach to teaching.
  • A significant contribution to scholarship in teaching and experience in curriculum development and/or unit/course coordination.
  • A record of research outputs/creative works in high-quality refereed academic journals/outlets consistent with the discipline and the level of appointment.
  • Evidence of an established reputation and growing profile and a record of obtaining research income, including nationally competitive research grants and/or fellowships. At a more junior level, we seek evidence of a growing trajectory towards research success.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to lead curriculum and/or research initiatives, provide mentoring to less experienced staff, and supervise students.
  • Demonstrated high-level communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to foster the development of a collegial and supportive working environment and the ability to interact with students and staff with cross-cultural sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to applying relevant and applicable policies, procedures, and legislation in the day-to-day performance of the functions of this position.
