The Role

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the teaching, research and community engagement activities in the Department of Linguistics through a program of support and mentoring in partnership with Walanga Muru and the Medical Research Future Fund grant 'Improving care pathways for otitis media in Aboriginal children'.

This position will contribute an Aboriginal perspective to promote wider student and staff understanding of Indigenous Australia and the skills to work effectively in Indigenous contexts.

The position aims to:

  • Contribute knowledge and experience to the Department of Linguistics in implementing and maintaining the Indigenous Connected Curriculum Framework,
  • Contribute knowledge and experience to Indigenous hearing health research undertaken in the Department, including promoting effective relationships with Aboriginal people and communities,
  • Build an academic track record and broader qualifications and experiences that will contribute to a future academic career.

In 2016, MQ launched a ten-year Indigenous strategy that aims to increase the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as both students and staff, and to recognise the unique contribution of knowledges and lived experiences by Indigenous people to the university environment as important to the intellectual and social capital of the University.

The Improving care pathways for otitis media in Aboriginal children research program is funded by the Medical Research Future Fund. It aims to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal children with otitis media, which can lead to hearing loss within 12 months of life, impacting development of listening, learning, speech and language and social cognition. Collaborating with three Aboriginal Medical Service's in NSW, we aim to:

Co-design a culturally safe pathway of ear and hearing care, and; Work with Aboriginal communities and service providers to produce culturally-safe early speech and language supports.

Essential

  • Aboriginality. Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification for these positions and is authorised under section 14(d) of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 197. Aboriginality is inclusive of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander values, perspectives, connections and knowledges that will contribute to an academic environment that privileges Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander standpoints.
  • Enrolled in a PhD with a focus on language reawakening and demonstrated capacity to complete such study within three years.
  • Previous qualifications and professional experience in linguistics or related field.
  • Proven record of work in and with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities which demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of Aboriginal peoples and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Evidence of potential to undertake lecturing and tutoring.
  • Commitment to the delivery of high-quality teaching, including the preparation of teaching and course material.
