Professorship (W3) in Transfusion Medicine and Molecular Haematology

(Successor to Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Erhard Seifried)

The candidate is Director of the Institute of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology Frankfurt am Main and Medical Director of the German Red Cross Blood Donor Service Baden-Württemberg - Hessen and at the same time a member of the Faculty of Medicine.

The DRK-Blutspendedienst Baden-Württemberg - Hessen gGmbH with its subsidiaries and affiliated companies is the largest transfusion medicine institution in Germany and one of the largest blood donation services in Europe. With its 17 institutes, it ensures the supply of blood preparations for more than 32 million people in seven federal states. It has all the modern technologies and methods of modern transfusion medicine at its disposal and sees itself as a leading institution of its kind in the European and international context. Through its cooperation with various medical faculties and university hospitals, the entire field of transfusion medicine research is represented in terms of structure and content. The blood transfusion service enjoys a high reputation due to the combination of scientific competence and the nationwide supply of blood preparations and transfusion medicine services, including to supramaximal care hospitals.

The Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology Frankfurt provides the University Hospital Frankfurt with all transfusion medicine services. There are numerous scientific cooperations with different clinics and institutes of the University Hospital and scientific groups of other scientific institutions in Frankfurt and beyond.

You represent the entire field of transfusion medicine including immunohaematology and molecular haematology in teaching, clinical practice and research. In addition to close cooperation in the care of haematological and, in particular, stem cell transplanted patients in internal medicine and paediatrics, there are further key areas in the field of transplantation immunology, cell and gene therapy, including the research and therapeutic utilisation of molecular cellular regulatory circuits. The GMP facility is also the central area for the production of cell therapeutics at Frankfurt University Hospital. The continuation of the previous work on the focus "Safety of blood preparations" in close cooperation with the clinics and institutes of the Medical Faculty is assumed. There is a cooperation agreement between the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and the DRK Blood Donation Service Baden-Württemberg - Hessen gGmbH, which regulates the cooperation between the two institutions.

In order to fulfil the comprehensive tasks, we expect a committed innovative personality with excellent knowledge and experience both in a field of science relevant to haemotherapy and cell therapy and in the clinical haematological or transfusion medicine care of patients with diseases relevant to the field of cell therapy.

You must have a specialist qualification in transfusion medicine or a specialist qualification in haematology in the field of internal medicine or paediatrics. You must have either experience or a particularly strong interest in the field of drug law and demonstrate willingness and ability to promote and train staff both in the specialist fields and in the scientific field. In addition, special organisational skills and management competence, experience in personnel management as well as the willingness to cooperate with the subjects to be served and a special interest in interdisciplinary research are prerequisites for a successful application. A successful candidate will have a convincing concept for the further development of the partnership between the blood transfusion service and Frankfurt University Medical Centre between the conflicting requirements of a high-volume manufacturer and developer of cell and gene therapy preparations, and the University Medical Centre with its clinical, research and teaching mission. The candidate is willing and able to actively contribute to the strategic development of the blood transfusion service and transfusion medicine in a sustainable and long-term manner.

Prerequisites for application are a completed university degree in human medicine, doctorate, habilitation or proof of equivalent scientific achievements, which may also have been achieved in the context of a junior professorship or outside the university sector, teaching experience, peer-reviewed third-party funding (DFG, BMBF or similar) and outstanding scientific publications.

In particular, we are welcoming applications by qualified women and people with a migrant background. At Goethe University, a special emphasis is placed on creating and sustaining a family-friendly work and research environment.
