Postdoctoral Research Associate

Updated: 4 months ago
Deadline: 15 Jan 2024

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellowship to work with Prof. Romeel Davé at the Institute for Astronomy within the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh. The primary aim is to combine state-of-the-art galaxy formation simulations mainly from the Simba suite together with recent observations using extragalactic HI-21cm radio surveys from MeerKAT to constrain galaxy formation models and provide theoretical support for multi-wavelength survey interpretation.  The applicant would be liaising closely with MeerKAT Key Project observational teams, in particular LADUMA, MIGHTEE, and MALS, assuming leadership in coordinating data/simulation comparisons and disseminating simulation data.  Additionally, the applicant would lead a robust science program, taking advantage of close connections to radio surveys and ancillary data in order to constrain the physics of galaxy evolution across cosmic time.  The detailed proposed work packages to be done are available upon request, but there is some flexibility based on the expertise and science interests of the applicant.  Applicants with a background in cosmological galaxy formation simulations and/or extragalactic radio surveys would be at a particular advantage.  Travel and equipment funds are available, and the applicant's visa costs can be reimbursed.

Please upload a summary of past research accomplishments and future research plans (max 3 pages), and arrange for at least 2 letters of reference to be sent to [email protected] .

The Institute for Astronomy, situated at the historic Royal Observatory Edinburgh up scenic Blackford Hill, features a dynamic environment with 30 faculty and over 100 researchers.  Local computing facilities include the IfA's 2000-core supercomputer.  The IfA is committed to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion in astronomy, and we welcome applicants from underrepresented groups.
