Postdoctoral Research Associate on Magnetic Fields and ALMA

Updated: 26 days ago
Deadline: 15 Apr 2024

Applications are invited for a 3-year postdoctoral position in the star formation group headed by Prof. Gary Fuller at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics (JBCA) , The University of Manchester, UK. For about 2/3 of the time, the successful applicant will work on studies of the role and impact of the magnetic fields in star forming regions. The successful applicant will primarily work as a member of the STREAMS (STar-forming Region Energetics Across Multiple Scales), a large international collaboration to study the magnetic fields and gas energetics across a wide range of scales in star forming clouds in the Galaxy. There is the opportunity to work on either the polarisation, continuum and spectral line observations, or simulations and their comparison with the observations. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with the ERC Synergy project ECOGAL (http://www.ecogal.eu/ ), of which the applicant will be a member. Currently the star formation group has three PhD students working in these areas.

The remaining 1/3 of the time will be spent contributing to the activities of the UK ALMA Regional Centre Node which supports the UK astronomical science exploitation of the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). As a member of the UK ARC Node, the applicant will be a member of the European ARC Network and work in close collaboration with the other groups in the JBCA which make up the Centre of Excellence in Radio Astronomy (CERA). The specific nature of the ARC Node duties will be discussed in light of the applicant’s skill set and interests but are likely to be focussed on software development.

This is a full-time 3 year post available immediately with possible extensions depending on performance and funding.
