Call for a contract Higher technician with an uncertain resolute term contract within the scope of the projects REDRESS and BioProtect projects-MSc Level

 

  • Position: The IMAR- Instituto do Mar, opens a call for the selection of candidates for a higher technician contract within the Horizon Europe Projects REDRESS “Restoration of deep-sea habitats to rebuild European Seas” (Grant agreement 101135492) and BioProtect “Advancing area-based management tools to accelerate the protection and restoration of marine biodiversity across the European sea basins” (Grant agreement 101157341).

    Field of research: Deep-sea ecology and restoration

    Admission requirements:

    The candidate must meet the following requirements, under penalty of exclusion:

    1) Master’s degree in biology, marine ecology or related areas;

  • Other skills that will be valued in the selection process:
  • Demonstrated experience in ecological restoration with sessile benthic animals (e.g. corals, sponges, hydroids);
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the biodiversity of deep-sea benthic fauna in the Azores; 
  • Demonstrated experience in the husbandry and experimentation with marine organisms under controlled conditions, preferably of deep-sea organisms;
  • Demonstrated knowledge on experimentation with benthic organisms under manipulated aquaria conditions (e.g. pH/pCO2, temperature), preferably of deep-sea organisms;
  • Demonstrated experience in research cruises or related field work;
  • Demonstrated knowledge on laboratory techniques for reproduction studies (e.g. histology);
  • Preference will be given to candidates with good knowledge of Portuguese and English languages.


    Specific Requirements

    Work plan: The selected candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team to quantify the impact of environmental and anthropogenic stressors on deep-sea benthic ecosystems in the Azores, including aquaria experiments and the development of methodologies and tools for deep-sea ecosystem restoration. Specific tasks for this position will include:

  • Collaboration with fisherman to obtain living deep-sea benthic organisms, e.g. cold-water corals, sponges and hydroids, accidentally captured as by-catch during fishing operations;
  • Development of best practices for the aquaria maintenance and preparation of fragments for transplantation of deep-sea organisms recovered from fisheries by-catch;
  • Collaborate in the design and set-up of restoration actions for the transplantation of deep-sea benthic organisms in the field: e.g. preparation of transplants, preparation of substrates for deployment and settlement plates;
  • Collaborate in the conceptual design and execution of experiments in aquaria to test the effects of local anthropogenic stressors (fishing, litter) and climate change (ocean acidification, warming, deoxygenation) on the physiology cold-water corals including: preparation of coral nubbins, measurement of physiological performance (e.g. respiration, excretion rates), taking seawater and  coral samples for further analysis;
  • Participation in sea campaigns for the deployment and monitoring of restoration activities;
  • Conduct image and video analysis of corals deployed during restoration activities for the quantification of transplants survival and growth rates, presence of associated fauna, among other variables;
  • Participate in laboratory activities for the assessment of the reproductive status of transplanted organisms, quantification of diversity and biomass of associated fauna and quantification of recruits on settlement plates;
  • Support with the organization of workshops with fishers and local authorities;
  • Support with the organization of project meetings, reports and manuscript preparation.

    Workplace: The work will be developed at IMAR, the Department of Fisheries and Oceanography of the University of the Azores (DOP-UAc) in Horta (Faial Island), under the supervision of Dr. Marina Carreiro-Silva

     

  • Duration of the contract:
  • In accordance with article 140, no.1, paragraph g), of the Portuguese labor Code, the contract aims to satisfy a temporary need of IMAR, for the execution of a precisely defined, non-durable service, whose context is explained in points 1 to 5, for the strictly necessary period.
  • The contract will come into effect on the date of signing and will expire when, foreseeing the occurrence of the term - termination of the projects referred to in point 1,or restriction, alteration, or reform of any of the funding sources, or force majeure reason - IMAR communicates its termination to the contracted party with at least 7, 30, or 60 days, depending on whether the contract has lasted up to six months, between six months and two years, or more, respectively, not exceeding, in any case, beyond the necessary period for the execution of the projects, nor exceeding the legal duration limit.

    Remuneration value: The monthly base salary will be 1385.98€ corresponding to level 16 of the single remuneration table for public service workers, whose equivalence is made for strictly salary purposes.


    Selection process

    Selection and evaluation process: Candidates will be selected base on the CV evaluation, taking into account the admission requirements and listed preferential skills. Interviews may be conducted to better assess the capability of candidates.

    The jury reserves the right not to award the contract in the event that no candidate presents the required academic training, the required qualifications and/or does not present the conditions and/or profile considered necessary for the effective execution of the tasks foreseen in the Project
