The University of Oregon is seeking applications for Research Development Administrator in the Research Development Services unit of the Office of Research, Innovation, and Graduate Education (RIGE).
The University of Oregon is a comprehensive research university and the AAU flagship institution of the Oregon University System. With over 25 interdisciplinary research centers and institutions and seven research-active Schools and Colleges, the UO regularly contributes research discoveries that benefit society and fuel the nation’s economy. Over the past decade, funding for research at the University of Oregon has grown steadily. During fiscal year 2010, UO’s external funding for research reached more than $110 million. To help sustain and grow that momentum, UO’s Office of Research, Innovation, and Graduate Education (RIGE) is seeking a qualified individual to join its Research Development Services unit to assist with the development of competitive external grant proposals.
Research Development Administrators at the UO assist Principal Investigators, administrators, and staff develop competitive external grant proposals, including those submitted to the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and other government agencies and funding sources. Research Development Administrators work closely with grant applicants at all stages of the proposal development process, from identification of funding opportunities to ensuring a proposal narrative meets program requirements to final submission. This position is expected to be a full-time administrative appointment reporting directly to the Director, Research Development Services.
The position available currently is focused on science-related projects and proposals. The successful candidate will have knowledge of and have the ability to quickly become familiar with subject matter in a wide variety of scientific and scholarly disciplines. Additionally, the successful candidate will have familiarity with research intensive institutions and a variety of federal and/or non-federal sponsored programs. It is our expectation that the finalist will have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse backgrounds and will maintain the highest ethical standards as a leader within their unit and within the university.

Improves the content, clarity, organization, and visual appeal of written documents; writes non-scientific proposal sections; and edits completed proposals.
Monitors, analyzes, and disseminates funding announcements from governmental and private sources, conducts funding searches and directs researchers to appropriate opportunities, presents grant-related workshops and training sessions, and initiates and participates in non-financial pre-award activities.
Supports faculty teams during the development of significant dollar, interdisciplinary, and multi-institutional proposals, including participation in meetings of proposal writing and development teams, developing proposal writing timelines and ensuring deadlines are met, and collaborating with Sponsored Projects Services personnel to help ensure compliance with sponsor requirements.
Manages and coordinates faculty-led multidisciplinary research initiatives and programs and applying for external funds to support those efforts. Identifies common and complementary research interests among faculty and assembles teams to address multidisciplinary funding opportunities.
Works with the Director of Research Development Services to create, compile, and organize institutional knowledge in research development. Define core processes and services in order to establish a set of Research Development “tools” and reusable resources.
Other duties as assigned, including administration of internal research development efforts or in response to external funding opportunities.
- Bachelor’s degree in science, OR communication, OR journalism, OR English;
- Three years professional experience in grant writing and proposal planning and development;
- Three years professional experience working in a deadline driven environment working on multiple projects;
- Two years experience in a scientific or clinically based environment;
- Two years experience working independently, setting appropriate work priorities and requiring minimal supervision over regular work activities
***All experience may be gained concurrently
- Graduate Degree in science, OR communications, OR journalism, OR English;
- Knowledge of the programs, policies and procedures associated with major research sponsors such as, but not exclusively, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
- Experience in a research-intensive or higher education environment
- Ability to work well in a team environment
Current resume, cover letter that directly addresses how candidate meets minimum qualifications as noted above and how the experiences and skill sets match the duties and responsibilities of the position; a written sample that represents candidate’s ability to translate technical information into an engaging non-technical format and an example of candidate’s proficiency in proposal writing (this can be one document or two).
