Position Type Temporary
Essential Job Duties
As North Carolina continues to experience effects of climate change, incorporating climate and resilience considerations into local planning and implementation is vital to shape sustainable growth and development. Small and rural communities are particularly vulnerable to social, economic, and environmental impacts, but have limited resources and capacity to address these challenges and prepare for a resilient future. In recent years, resilience planning processes conducted through NC Resilient Coastal Communities Program (RCCP) and Regions Innovating for Strong Economies and Environment (RISE) efforts have resulted in planning tools—including resilience goals, risk and vulnerability assessments, and priority project portfolios—for communities across the coastal plain to incorporate into their local and regional plans. With a new state requirement for local comprehensive planning, communities will benefit from guidance on how to direct technical assistance providers to integrate climate change and resilience into planning and engagement processes.

The intern will work closely with the Sea Grant team and partners to:
  • Conduct a literature review of existing resources and local solicitations in North Carolina and other regions (such as Request for Proposals) that guide the scope of planning services for the development of comprehensive plans.
  • Analyze documents to determine gaps and best practices that support integration of resilience into land use planning processes.
  • Identify recommendations for critical considerations for NC communities to include in solicitations.
