Delbert Oberteuffer Scholarship
Delbert Oberteuffer, Professor Emeritus, Ohio State University, was a man and an educator for all seasons. He was the first recipient of the AAHE Professional Service Award in 1975. He also received the Gulick Award, the highest honor of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). A Centennial Symposium named in his honor was held at the annual AAHE conference in 1985.
Dr. Oberteuffer was an acknowledged and respected leader; an articulate, dynamic speaker; and a prolific author, with approximately eight hundred public addresses and more than one hundred published books and articles to his credit. During his retirement years, he became a well-known television personality in the Columbus, Ohio area.
Many considered him the health educator's health educator, and his concept of the totality of person—"Man in Function…Man in Total"—remains a significant concept in health education. His sophisticated yet simplistic philosophy provided a bridge from the theoretical to the practical and linked cause with effect. His 1977 AAHPERD publication, Concepts and Convictions, contains the best of his teachings about the nature of health and of health education.
This academic achievement award will be $1,500, which may be used at the discretion of the recipient. The scholarship recipient will be recognized at the annual Awards Luncheon at the AAHE/AAHPERD convention. Application materials must be received by November 15. The recipient will be notified in December.
