UCL - United World Colleges - Undergraduate International Outreach Bursaries
University College London (UCL) and United World Colleges (UWC) have agreed to collaborate in a scheme to enable graduates of a UWC, who are financially unable to study in the UK, to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at UCL. With this scheme UCL supports the aims of UWC to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Two bursaries are available annually for UWC-nominated students who have firmly accepted their UCL admissions offer.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a final-year IB diploma student attending a United World College (or completed their studies in the preceding calendar year - candidates from Waterford Kamhlaba UWC only);
- Apply for admission through UCAS by January for a full-time undergraduate degree programme of study at UCL and firmly accept your UCL offer;
- Be assessed as paying overseas tuition fees; and
- Lack the financial means necessary to pursue undergraduate degree studies at UCL.
Selection Criteria
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial hardship and academic merit, based on the aims of the bursary.
Value: Benefits and Duration
Each bursary will consist of full tuition fees and a maintenance allowance for the duration of the student’s programme of study, as well as international economy air travel to/from the UK at the beginning and end of the bursary-holder’s degree programme. The maintenance allowance will normally rise each year in line with inflation but at the absolute discretion of UCL. In addition, the bursary includes an allowance (on request and up to a specified maximum sum per bursary holder) to permit two members of the bursary-holder’s family to attend their graduation ceremony. Annual renewal of the bursary is subject to good academic progress by the student.
Applications, Deadline and Procedure
You must apply for admission to UCL to be eligible to apply for a bursary.
Application for a bursary is by invitation. Taking into account the financial circumstances of their students, UWC Guidance Counselors/University Advisers will invite up to three eligible students from each UWC to apply for the bursary. If you fulfil all the eligibility criteria listed above, you may wish to inform your Guidance Counselor/University Advisor that you are interested in being invited to apply. Those students invited to apply will be provided with an electronic bursary application form by their Guidance Counselor/University Advisor, and will also by late February/early March receive an essay topic set each year by UCL, and instructions regarding the essay which is part of the application for a bursary.
NOTE: Essays must not exceed the permitted word count and be in the candidate’s own words. All essays will be checked for plagiarism. We would advise all students to consult our website on plagiarism. If an essay is found to exceed the permitted number of words, or if UCL finds evidence of plagiarism, the entire application will be deemed ineligible, and will not be considered for a bursary.
Complete applications and essays must be submitted electronically to the UWC Guidance Counselor/University Advisor by 16 March. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered for funding. Your application is deemed incomplete without a valid UCAS application number. Each UWC Guidance Counselor/University Advisor will forward the three applications to UCL Student Funding Office before or by 27 April.
Selection Procedure
From the applications received, UCL will select the two academically most promising candidates to be offered a bursary, subject to fulfilling the conditions of the UCL offer of admission.
Notification of Results
Successful applicants and reserve candidates can expect to be notified by UCL by mid/late May.
