The University of Nottingham has recently made a strategic investment in the area of ‘Biological Engineering’ - a fusion of molecular life sciences with engineering. Its aim is both to advance fundamental understanding of how biological systems operate and to develop effective biology-based technologies for biomanufacturing processes.
The Clostridia Research Group (CRG) at Nottingham (http://www.clostron.com/people.php) represents one component of this investment. Part of its remit is to exploit the biocatalytic diversity of bacteria in the production of biofuels and other chemical commodities from renewables (biomass and waste gases) using synthetic biology approaches. Established in 2004, the CRG posses a battery of proprietary gene tools with which it is possible to create microbial cell factories for chemicals and therapeutics. They lead one of the six programmes that together make up the BBSRC Sustainable Bioenergy Centre (BSBEC, http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/research/biotechnology-bioenergy/bsbec/bsbec-index.aspx). To accomplish our aims we are seeking an innovative individual with appropriate skill sets to join our well funded team of approximately 30 researchers.
Candidates should have a PhD in microbiology/biochemistry or a related discipline. Postgraduate experience in metabolic engineering and/or synthetic biology is highly desirable. The appointed individual will be expected to contribute to the goals of the group through the development of complimentary research programmes. Excellent academic qualifications, relevant publication record, strong initiative and good teamwork skills are a must.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor N Minton, Tel: 0115 846 4578 or email: nigel.minton@nottingham.ac.uk. See also http://www.clostron.com/people.php. Please note that applications sent directly to these email addresses will not be accepted.
