PhD Scholarships 2012

About

The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science invites applications for several SMSAS scholarships to carry out doctoral research in any of the research areas covered by the School: Actuarial Science and Finance; Pure and Applied Mathematics; and Statistics.

Details of the research undertaken by the School can be found here

The School offers a lively research culture with a thriving group of over 200 taught and research postgraduate students. Kent is among the best research-intensive universities in the UK. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the university was ranked 24th out of 159 institutions for its world-leading research, with six of our subject areas (including statistics) in the top ten nationwide.

The Scholarships

Two types of SMSAS scholarship will be available for a September 2012 start:

EPSRC-funded scholarships cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate and provide a maintenance grant for 3.5 years (subject to satisfactory progress) at the same rate as the UK Research Council's (£13,590 per annum in 2011-12).

Graduate Teaching Assistantships cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate and provide a combined maintenance grant and salary, equivalent to the maintenance grant offered by the UK Research Councils (£13,590 in 2011-12).  These are offered for 3 years (subject to satisfactory progress in research and teaching). GTA candidates may apply to the School for an extension scholarship (maintenance grant and home/EU fees) to support up to 6-12 months of additional research after the GTA has finished. The School expects that GTA students will do no more than 6 hours of teaching and teaching-related duties per week during term-time.

Applicants will be considered for both types of scholarships. For full details please see the School's website

Criteria

Candidates must hold a good Honours degree (First or 2i) or a Master’s degree (MSc, MMath, MSci) at merit or distinction in a relevant subject or equivalent. For best consideration, candidates should either have a Master's degree or expect to finish their Master's by September 2012.
The scholarship competition is open to all PhD applicants. UK, EU and overseas fee paying students are invited to apply. Overseas students would have to make up the difference between the Home and Overseas tuition fees.

How to apply

SMSAS scholarship applications will be considered in two rounds. The deadlines for receipt of a fully-completed application are:

  • First deadline Friday 20 April 2012
  • Second deadline Friday 22 June 2012.

To be eligible, candidates must make a formal application for postgraduate research study at the University of Kent. Applications to the University can be made online

Your application must include a proposed supervisor and give a clear indication of the research area in which you wish to work. You should also include details of your

  • experience, if any, of academic or professional research
