Graduate Teaching Assistantships


About

The School of European Culture and Languages is delighted to be able to offer up to seven Graduate Teaching Assistantships for new doctoral students commencing their studies in September 2012 in the fields of Classical and Archaeological Studies, Comparative Literature, English Language and Linguistics, French, German, Hispanic Studies, Italian, Philosophy, and Religious Studies.
SECL Graduate Teaching Assistantships will be awarded to outstanding applicants able to demonstrate a high level of academic achievement, excellent communication skills suited to undergraduate teaching, and the potential to make a strong contribution to their chosen field of research.

  • Three fully funded PhD scholarship in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) which will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate plus a maintenance grant and a salary element. The maintenance grant together with the salary will be equivalent to that offered by the UK Research Councils for 2012 (the rate is currently set at £13,590 for 2011).
  • Four PhD scholarships in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs). These scholarships represent a fee waiver that will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate plus a maintenance grant and a salary element totalling £7,800 per year.

Criteria

Graduate Teaching Assistantships in the School of European Culture and Languages are open to applicants who have been offered a place to commence their studies in September 2012 on any one of the School’s Doctoral programmes. In order to qualify for the above scholarships candidates must:

  • Hold a First-Class Bachelor’s degree or a Distinction at Master’s level (or equivalent) in a relevant subject
  • Hold an offer of a place on a full-time doctoral research degree in the School of European Culture and Languages for the academic year commencing September 2012
  • Have excellent communication skills, both written and oral
The Assistantships will be offered for one year in the first instance, renewable for a maximum of three years, subject to satisfactory academic performance. Recipients will be expected to undertake four hours of teaching per week over the three years of the award. The SECL GTA competition is open to UK, EU and overseas fee-paying students.

Candidates must have made a formal application to study on a SECL doctoral programme, and have received the unconditional offer of a place to commence their studies in September 2012. Candidates must also send a supporting statement, not exceeding 1,000 words, outlining why they feel they are suitable to be awarded a SECL Graduate Teaching Assistantship. Paris Scholarships


Applicants who have been offered a place on any of the Kent at Paris MA programmes in Comparative Literature, French and Comparative Literature, Modern French Studies, and Postcolonial Studies may also apply for one of up to ten Kent at Paris Scholarships, currently valued at £6,000 each. Paris Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding applicants able to demonstrate a high level of academic achievement, clear intellectual ambition and the potential to make a strong contribution to their chosen MA programme.

MA in Heritage Management Scholarships (Athens)


The School of European Culture and Languages at the University of Kent and the Bodossakis Foundation are delighted to announce four full fees scholarships (or several partial scholarships) for Home/EU/International students applying to the MA in Heritage Management (Athens) programme (fees are currently set at 7500 euros for all applicants).

MA Scholarships for Taught Master's Students


The School of European Culture and Languages is pleased to be able to offer the following Master’s Scholarships for the academic year 2012–13:

  • Two full fees scholarship (£4,900) for Home/EU students for a Master’s programme within the School
  • Two partial fees scholarships (£4,900) for overseas paying students for a Master’s programme within the School

Criteria
All Taught MA Scholarships are open to applicants who have been offered a place to commence their studies in September 2012 on any one of the School’s Canterbury-based Taught MA programmes. (For further information on our Athens and Paris scholarships, please see below). In order to qualify for the above scholarships, candidates must:

  • Hold a First-Class Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent qualification)
  • Hold an offer of a place on a full-time Taught MA programme in the School of European Culture and Languages for the academic year commencing September 2012
  • Have excellent communication skills, both written and oral

The SECL MA scholarship competitions are open to UK, EU and overseas fee-paying students.

Candidates must have made a formal application to study on a SECL Taught Master’s programme, and have received an offer of a place to commence their studies in September 2012. Candidates must also send a supporting statement, not exceeding 500 words, outlining why they feel they are suitable to be awarded a scholarship. Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) 2013


University of Kent applications for AHRC funding are under the AHRC's Block Grant Partnership (BGP) Competition whereby universities are allocated a specific number of awards for certain subjects.

It is anticipated that the School of European Culture and Languages will be allocated two BGPs to support one PhD and one Masters starting in the 2013-14 academic year:

Language Lector Opportunities for Taught MA Students


Every year there are a number of vacancies for Language Lectors in French, German, Italian, and Hispanic Studies. Students must be native speakers of the language they will be teaching. Language Lectors are normally awarded a partial fee remission towards a taught MA programme of study plus an annual stipend for a set amount for additional teaching. Further information on this scheme will be available shortly.
