School of Bisciences - Doctoral Training Partnership in Bioscience

BBSRC Studentships in Biorenewables and Bioenergy
The University of Nottingham, in partnership with Rothamsted Research (RRes), has a world class reputation in Bioenergy and Biorenewables. The University has been awarded a BBSRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) which includes a number of PhD Studentships to work on biocatalytic systems for manufacturing biofuels, platform chemicals, pharmaceutical intermediates and biotherapeutics. Students receive a general training in the first six months, including a series of 3 mini-projects which provide experience of working in different research areas. At the end of the first six months, you will choose from a selection of interdisciplinary projects in Bioenergy and Biorenewables. The projects will focus on the science and engineering of the microbial and enzymatic processes (including the interface with process chemistry) and with a strong emphasis on systems biology, systems chemistry and systems engineering. Many of the projects include collaborative links with industry. Details of project areas are available at: Biorenewables and Bioprocessing Research Group; Bioenergy ; ClosTron.com - Clostridia Research Group (CRG).
Applications are invited from students with backgrounds in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemical Engineering, or related disciplines who have or expect to graduate with a first or upper second, MSc or equivalent.
Funding is available for four years from Autumn 2012. This studentship includes a three-month full-time placement outside of the research environment.
Further information regarding the DTP is available at: www.nottingham.ac.uk/graduateschool/BiosciencesDTP

Eligibility for full funding is restricted to UK (fees and stipend). EU students are eligible for fees only awards, unless the applicants fulfil the residency criteria for a full award.

Applicants should go to http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/graduateschool/doctoral-training-centres/bbsrc-doctoral-training-programme-in-biosciences/index.aspx to download the application and reference forms. Applications should include a fully completed application form, CV and two references. Application forms and CVs should be named in the following format: SURNAME-initial-DTP_IBB-application.doc (.docx or.pdf) and SURNAME-initial-DTP_IBB-cv.doc (.docx or.pdf) e.g. SMITH-A-DTP¬_IBB-application.doc

Applications should be sent via email with the subject line ‘BBSRC DTP IBB’ to pg-funding@nottingham.ac.uk by the deadline: Noon, Monday 16th July 2012.

References should be sent directly from the referees to pg-funding@nottingham.ac.uk by the deadline: Noon, Monday 16th July 2012. (further details are on the reference form).

Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
Please note that two references are required for each applicant and that it is the responsibility of applicants to ensure that these are submitted by their referees by the deadline. Please ensure that referees are sent both the referee report form to complete, and the associated guidance notes, in plenty of time.
Previous applicants need not apply.
Enquiries should be sent to: pg-funding@nottingham.ac.uk
Please quote ref: BBSRC DTP
Closing date: Noon, Monday 16th July 2012.
