School of Biosciences – Plant and Crop Sciences Division
Research Technician in Plant Root Phenotyping (Fixed-term)
£21,171 to £25,251 per annum depending on skills & experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance
Applications are invited for a technician based in the Division of Plant and Crop Sciences, School of Biosciences, at the Sutton Bonington Campus. This position is associated with a BBSRC project "High-throughput screening of arable crop roots", funded under the Crop Improvement Research Club scheme.
Plant roots are essential for the uptake of water and nutrients from soil, and represent a vast and largely untapped resource for breeding improved varieties of crops. The project aims to develop high-throughput techniques for measuring altered root morphology in a wide range of cultivars of the main UK arable crops (oilseed rape, barley and wheat). The main focus for this post-holder will be to measure the roots of young oilseed rape plants using high-throughput in vitro and image analysis techniques. There is also a requirement for the post-holder to sample and analyse root material from oilseed rape plants growing at field sites in the UK.
This is a joint project between the University of Nottingham and the James Hutton Institute in Dundee, with several industry partners. The post-holder will interact with a range of scientists from all of these organisations and will receive considerable training opportunities during the course of the project.
The successful candidates will join a research group led by Dr Martin Broadley focussing on plant and crop nutrition, and will work in the state-of-the-art Plant Sciences laboratories at the University of Nottingham's Sutton Bonington Campus and make use of the University's extensive glasshouse facilities. There is a requirement for the post-holder to travel to field sites and to research establishments within the UK.
Candidates should have an HNC or equivalent in a subject related to agricultural or plant/crop sciences, or substantial work experience in a relevant role.
This post will be offered on a 3 year fixed-term contract from 1 October 2012.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Mr Bob Kear, tel: 0115 951 6330 or email: robert.kear@nottingham.ac.uk Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
