Description
Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Quantum Dot Spin Physics for Experimental Quantum Information Science at the Centre for Quantum Photonics, School of Physics and Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
Based in the Centre for Quantum Photonics, you will be a lead researcher in the EU FP7 collaborative project SPANGL4Q under the supervision of the Co-ordinator, Dr. Ruth Oulton. You will have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in Physics or a related discipline. The aim of your research will be to establish the feasibility of ultra-long spin quantum memories based on the electron-nuclear interaction in semiconductor quantum dots embedded in photonic structures. The principle measurement of these effects would be by optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR). Your research will principally be based at the University of Bristol in the Centre for Nanoscience and Quantum Information, with collaboration visits to EU partners in Germany, the Netherlands and Russia likely. As well as general laboratory and data-processing experience, a strong basis in one of optical semiconductor physics, spin physics, microscopy techniques, and/or nanophotonics is desirable.
The SPANGL4Q project represents a unique opportunity to work on a ground-breaking project with our EU team of top researchers in semiconductor spin physics and photonics. The Centre for Quantum Photonics is a world-leading research centre, developing future photonic quantum technologies and the fundamental science that underpins them. Research areas include: waveguide single photon sources, integrated photonic circuits, superconducting single photon detectors, and single spin-photon systems in diamond. Applications are focused on quantum communication, quantum sensing and quantum computing, including quantum simulations. Our future vision is to combine quantum dot spin physics with integrated quantum circuits and quantum communication systems.
The post is for a two year period in the first instance, with further funding anticipated. While the PI’s group is well gender-balanced, we particularly encourage applications from suitably qualified female applicants, as women are currently underrepresented in the SPANGL4Q project.
It is expected that interviews will be held in the School of Physics early October 2012.
