Description

Applications are invited for two early career public health researchers to contribute to a programme of work to improve the health of children and adolescents within the School of Social and Community Medicine (Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry). You will be involved in a range of programmes of research including alcohol, tobacco and substance misuse, physical activity and healthy eating, sexual health and mental health. The post is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in applying research methods to public health. You will work with experienced researchers from a range of disciplines and contribute to peer-reviewed publications. You will contribute to ongoing research and grant applications using a range of methods including literature searches, systematic reviews, qualitative methods, primary data collection and quantitative analysis. You will be given a broad training in public health research but will be encouraged to develop specialist areas of expertise.
There are two public health research units located within the School for Social and Community Medicine and you will work closely with both. The first, DECIPHer (Centre for the Development and Evaluation of Complex Interventions for Public Health Improvement), is a UKCRC Centre of Public Health Research Excellence, and brings together leading experts from a range of disciplines to tackle public health issues such as diet, nutrition and physical activity; and alcohol, tobacco and drugs, and has a particular focus on developing and evaluating multi-level interventions that will have an impact on the health and well-being of children and young people. The second, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) School for Public Health Research (SPHR), was launched in April 2012 and is a collaboration between eight leading academic centres with excellence in applied public health research in England. The NIHR School for Public Health Research aims to increase the evidence base for effective public health practice.
Candidates with research experience are welcomed, but we anticipate the role will be best suited to academically excellent candidates with a recent MSc or PhD in Public Health or a closely related subject who have demonstrable potential to become independent public health researchers.
