Applications are invited for a three-year Research Assistant position in the Particle Physics Group of the School of Physics. You will work on the TORCH R&D program to construct and prototype an innovative high-precision time-of-flight system suitable for large areas, up to tens of square meters.
This novel detector system has the potential to revolutionize particle identification in the difficult intermediate momentum region, up to 20 GeV/c. As well as verifying the time-of-flight detector principles, a second strong motivation behind the project is to develop suitable ultra-fast photon detectors for the TORCH. This project is funded by the European Research Council and is a collaboration between the Universities of Bristol and Oxford and CERN.
Your specific responsibilities will include the development and construction of the photon detector test setup, including the analysis software, participation in the test-beam activities, both the commissioning and the analysis. In addition, you will play a vital role in the development of the photodetector simulation package.
If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed-term or an open-ended contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research experience. Three years’ appropriate and relevant experience at another higher education institution would normally lead to an appointment on an open-ended contract.
