The University of Southampton is home to the world-leading Centre for Photonic Metamaterials, which was established in 2010 with a £6-million Programme Grant from The UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Metamaterials are manmade media with all sorts of unusual and useful functionalities achieved by artificial structuring at length scales smaller than that of light. The Centre for Photonic Metamaterials (www.metamaterials.org.uk) pursues an innovative, interdisciplinary research agenda, capitalizing on the University’s new multimillion-pound Mountbatten Building cleanroom and laboratory complex, which aims to develop a new generation of active photonic media to provide ground-breaking solutions in fields from telecoms and imaging to energy/light generation, data storage, and defence.

We are seeking a brilliant and highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to work on the programme as a Project Leader for Superconducting and Quantum Metamaterials. You will have a keen interest in studying the fundamental physics of superconducting metamaterials and quantum devices and in developing their functionalities from the proof-of-principle stage to practical applications. A background in experimental solid-state physics research will be required. Experience in material patterning and micro/mm-wave techniques will be an advantage. The ability to work as part of a highly interactive interdisciplinary research team will be essential.

Initial appointment will be for 2 years from November 2012 or shortly after. The appointment will be made in the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Southampton.
