The Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences. Academic Unit of Chemistry has a two-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in the research group of Professor Malcolm H. Levitt (www.mhl.soton.ac.uk). The project concerns the development of new NMR and MRI methods involving the hyperpolarization of long-lived nuclear spin states. The postdoctoral position involves the design, construction, and application of instrumentation for achieving the project aims. The postdoctoral researcher will also participate in the novel NMR and MRI experiments and help develop new research ideas and applications. The position is initially for 2 years with the possibility of a further extension for 1 year.

You must have a PhD in Physics, Chemistry or Engineering and have experience in the design and construction of scientific instrumentation, especially microwave and/or radiofrequency circuits. Experience of NMR techniques and the underlying theory is desirable. Experience of operating an NMR spectrometer and practical experience of hyperpolarized NMR is desirable.

The preferred start date is May 2012.
