Development of novel stable isotopic approaches to measure protein and lipid metabolism in humans in response to exercise and nutritional intervention.

Supervisors: This project will be jointly supervised by Drs Ken Smith and Phil Atherton and Professors Paul Greenhaff and Ian MacDonald (for more details see: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/biomedsci/index.aspx, http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/gem/index.aspx).

Applications are invited from highly motivated individuals for the above studentship, based at the Schools of Graduate Entry Medicine and Health at the Royal Derby Hospital and Biomedical Sciences at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. The successful candidate will join the Metabolic Physiology group, which functions across both sites under the direction of Professor Paul Greenhaff, Professor of Muscle Physiology.  (see: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/biomedsci/world-leading-research/metabolic-physiology.aspx).

The group is unique in its ability to undertake comprehensive metabolic investigations in humans with integration from a whole-body to molecular level; is internationally renowned and has recently been awarded MRC/ARUK centre status for “musculo-skeletal ageing” in partnership with the University of Birmingham. Additionally the group has a strong track record in obtaining funding from government and charity funding bodies and industry partners. The candidate will benefit from the breadth of expertise and techniques available to the Metabolic Physiology Research group, in a research environment that is unique within the UK.

This project will involve the application of novel stable isotope approaches to measure and understand the regulation of human metabolism (primarily protein and lipid turnover) in health and disease. The successful candidate will gain experience and practical skills in the use of state of the art mass spectrometry, modern molecular and biochemical techniques, e.g. cell culture, western blotting and PCR thereby providing comprehensive skills and training to students embarking on a career in biomedical research.

Applicants should have, or will expect to attain at least a 2i degree classification in biochemistry, pharmacology, neuroscience or physiology (or a related discipline).

This studentship is available for a period of 3 years and provides a stipend of £13,590 per annum. This studentship is available to UK/EU citizens due to funding restrictions.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Ken Smith and Dr Phil Atherton Email: ken.smith@nottingham.ac.uk or phil.atherton@nottingham.ac.uk Tel: 01332 724700/724725.  Please note that applications sent directly to these Email addresses will not be accepted.

Application forms are available from Mrs Sue Rougeolle, sue.rougeolle@nottingham.ac.uk.  Application forms, with two copies of a detailed CV and the names and addresses of two referees, should be sent to Mrs S Rougeolle, School of Graduate Entry Medicine and Health, Medical School, Royal Derby Hospital, Uttoxeter New Road, Derby, DE22 3DT.  Email: Sue.Rougeolle@Nottingham.ac.uk.  Please quote ref: MED/1041.
