PhD Studentship: Quantum Coding assisted Quantum Key distribution

Updated: about 1 month ago
Location: Southampton, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 31 Aug 2024

Project title: Quantum Coding assisted Quantum Key distribution

Supervisory Team: Prof Michael Ng, Prof Lajos Hanzo, Dr Chao Xu

Project description:

The University of Southampton is expanding its PhD research in the area of Quantum Technology Engineering. In addition to the research project outlined below you will receive substantial training in scientific, technical, and commercial skills.

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is one of the cornerstones in ultimately secure communication, leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics to establish cryptographic keys immune to eavesdropping. While QKD itself offers unparalleled security guarantees, the integration of diverse error correction coding techniques holds promise for further enhancing the robustness and efficiency of key distribution protocols. More specifically, error correction codes could be designed to mitigate challenges such as quantum noise and decoherence, for ensuring the fidelity and integrity of transmitted quantum information. Additionally, opportunities afforded by quantum physic such as entanglement and superposition can be harnessed in the design of error correction codes. Research into tailored error correction codes for quantum communication channels enhances the reliability of QKD systems, bolstering security and facilitating broader adoption of quantum technologies in wireless communication.
