Project description:

As advances are made in Artificial Intelligence (AI), the technology is being applied to health-related problems. The University of Southampton with funding from the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre have a range of PhD opportunities involving the investigation of how technology can be applied to and change our approach to health care.

Projects range from:

  • Data-driven analysis of real perioperative care data to identify factors that significantly change patient surgical outcomes.
  • Understanding the effect of trust and trustworthiness of technology in health systems as perceived by underserved populations.

We have the opportunity for multiple fully-funded PhD encompassing qualitative and quantitative approaches, working at the interface of data-driven algorithms for medical care and sociotechnical research.

Working within the Southampton Biomedical Research Centre, these projects sit within a world-leading digital ecosystem centred around translating cutting-edge tools and technologies to improve patient outcomes. Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent) in one of the following related subject areas:

  • Computer Science
  • Data and Information Science
  • Digital Health
  • Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning
  • Bioengineering (or Biomedical Engineering)
  • Medicine or Health Sciences
  • Economics or Social Sciences

Closing date : applications should be received no later than 15 April 2024 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place. Please apply once you are ready and do not leave your application to the last minute because the funding allocation takes place every couple of months.

Funding: For UK students, Tuition Fees and a stipend of £15,285 tax-free per annum for up to 4 years.
