PhD Studentship: Green Revolution: Crafting a Sustainable Future Sports through Textile Innovation

The textile industry faces a significant challenge due to the generation of large volumes of waste, usage of non-biodegradable materials that impose a substantial burden on the environment. This project aims to develop a sustainable evaluation method for the entire lifecycle of textiles and garments, from fiber production to end-use. Our focus will be on innovating bio-based materials and evaluating their performance and environmental impact relative to traditional materials. The student will conduct comprehensive assessments of textile and garment performance, as well as evaluate carbon and water footprints.

The Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical, and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University is one of the largest engineering schools in the UK. We provide £500 for PhD students each year for attending conferences and buying consumables. Our Sports Technology Institute is a multi-disciplinary team and internationally renowned for its work with global brands and sports federations, including Adidas, PING, Head, FIFA, Wattbike, England & Wales Cricket Board, New Balance, Nike, UK Sport, Reebok, Speedo, and others, in the design, simulation, testing, and manufacturing of sporting goods. Applicants should hold a very good undergraduate degree, equivalent to a UK 2:1 honors degree or its international equivalent.

We encourage applications from candidates with diverse engineering backgrounds, including Textile Science and Engineering, Materials, Chemistry, Polymer, Biotechnology or related fields. Student with knowledge and experience in sustainable evaluation, LCA assessment, textiles and polymer would be beneficial. A master's degree and/or relevant research experience will be viewed favorably.

Commencement Date: The successful candidate is expected to commence the PhD program in October 2024.
