The Graduate Bioengineer will work as part of an international multidisciplinary team on a project funded by industry to undertake research in medical engineering. Specifically, you will undertake experimental simulations into biomechanics, biomaterials and biotribology of total knee joint replacements, studying wear.
It is essential that you have BSc, BEng, MEng in Engineering or Physical Science and experience of experimental work. You will also have experience of working both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as is a willingness to work flexibly.

Job Summary

The Graduate Bioengineer will work as part of an international multidisciplinary team on a project funded by industry to undertake research in medical engineering. Specifically, you will undertake experimental simulations into biomechanics, biomaterials and biotribology of total knee joint replacements, studying wear.
Background

This post is based in the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (iMBE) which hosts over 100 academic post-doctoral and post-graduate researchers and staff working in three areas - joint replacement, spine, and tissue engineering. Our strength is the multidisciplinary nature of the team; the Institute combines the expertise of engineers, scientists, medics and clinicians who, when working together, are better able to translate scientific discovery and research into practical application, and shorten the journey from bench to bedside. Our work is supported by external funding of over �50 million, including ten major programme grants. The iMBE is hosted by the faculties of Engineering and Biological Sciences. The School of Mechanical Engineering is one of the top five research intensive departments in UK while the Faculty of Biological Sciences is the largest research unit in the top ten in the UK (2008 research assessment). The iMBE is one of the largest medical engineering centres in Europe and an established leader in the field. Our vision is, "by 2015, iMBE will be the leading global centre of excellence in medical engineering, recognised world-wide for our distinctive ability to successfully translate scientific excellence and innovative research, in the fields of medical devices and regenerative medicine, into effective clinical therapies for the treatment of human diseases and disabilities.
The School of Mechanical Engineering has a track record of delivering high quality research to solve real world problems with particular expertise in: engineering systems and design; thermofluids, surfaces and interfaces; medical devices and regenerative medicine in conjunction with colleagues in Biological Sciences and Medicine.
With 70 academic and research staff and over 700 students the School is a major player in the field of mechanical engineering.
Main Duties and Responsibilities

The points below provide a framework for the role and should not be regarded as a definitive list of duties and responsibilities which may develop and change over time.
The Graduate Engineer will be involved in delivering research projects on the tribology of knee prostheses. Research will involve experimental simulation models relating to studies of knee joint replacement.
Research Projects

� To undertake experimental tribological experiments and simulations of knee joint replacements and their constituent materials.
� To undertake advanced methods of measurement of surfaces.
� To maintain good records and laboratory notebooks.
� To prepare, collate and interpret results and carry out statistical analysis under supervision.
� To prepare research reports for customers and abstracts for conference publications under supervision.
� To co-ordinate day-to-day project work, ensure good progress is maintained and work is undertaken in a systematic way.
� To interface with internal and external bodies.
� To co-ordinate work with other internal and external collaborators.
� Work within and apply the standard operating procedures, health and safety regulations and quality assurance procedures of both the Institute and the School and be responsible for the health and safety management of research work.
� To attend research group and laboratory meetings as appropriate.
� Training of staff and students in the use of laboratory facilities and equipment.
� To be committed to Good Laboratory Practice and continuous improvement.
Communications
� To attend regular meetings to discuss progress and intended plan of work.
� Communicate effectively and provide information to academic supervisor.
� Attend and prepare reports for regular meetings with other members of the group and with external collaborators to report progress, agree future work and exchange data/experience.
� Liaise effectively with staff at all levels.
� Work effectively and positively as required as a team player on a broad range of activities and related projects within the Institute to help achieve the broader strategic development of the aims and objectives of the Institute.
