Economics continues to be one of the most important of the social science disciplines. The pathway brings together the distinctive expertise and track record of research excellence in three institutions – Cardiff, Bangor and Swansea. Bangor is an international research leader in Financial Economics, consistently ranked amongst the top 20 institutions in the world for Banking research, and is the host institution of the Institute of European Finance (IEF).

Applications are invited for a competitive fully-funded PhD studentship at the Bangor Business School at Bangor University, Wales. We will be considering PHD research proposals in the following areas:

Macroeconomics: Monetary Policy, Economic Development

Financial Economics, Financial Technology and Financial Institutions

Microeconomics: Industrial Economics, Energy and Environmental, Behavioural Economics

International Economics: International Money and Finance, Exchange Rates, International Trade, Foreign Direct Investment, Globalisation.

To receive ESRC studentship funding, you must have qualifications or experience equal to an honours degree at a first or upper second-class level, or a master's from a UK academic research organisation. Please note that you may need to provide evidence of your English Language proficiency.

Interviews may be held in person but should also be available through Zoom/Teams for all students who wish to participate in that way.  

The studentship funded by the ESRC covers tuition fees, an annual tax-free living stipend of in line with UKRI minimum rates  (currently £18,622 for 2023/24). If you have a disability, you may be entitled to a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)  on top of your studentship.  Students have access to a Research Training Support Grant.

The duration of the research is dependent on prior research experience and training needs which will be assessed by completing an Initial Development Needs Analysis (Initial DNA) at the application stage and a Full DNA prior to award if successful.  

Bangor University, in conjunction with colleagues in the WGSS, will undertake an assessment of the successful applicant’s training needs and work with them to tailor the training they are offered to meet their research needs.

This may include:

  • 3.5 - 4.5 years programme – support for a research training PhD and placement, particular where indicated by the WGSSS’s EDI and Widening Participation goals
  • in the case of PhD in Economics, there will also be the option of a 2 years master's followed by a 2.5 year PhD programme.
