The Department of Education at the University of York is offering a fully funded ESRC PhD studentship begining in Autumn 2012, covering fees, maintenance (for UK students only) and a research training support grant. Supervision is offered in three main areas: Language Learning, Science Education, and Education and Social Justice. The studentship is open to UK and EU candidates who hold a relevant MA or BA, or expect to hold one by October 2012. Candidates can apply on a 1+3 (Master + PhD) or +3 (PhD only) basis. The deadline is 3 February 2012, by which time candidates should have been accepted on the programme. Candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

FURTHER INFORMATION
Education at York has been awarded an ESRC PhD Scholarship as part of the Education cluster of training pathways within the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre, a major collaboration between the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York with a total of 48 ESRC studentships per year over 5 years. The White Rose Doctoral Training Centre is one of the largest consortia in the country and offers a wealth of supervisory expertise across the social sciences as well as numerous training opportunities, particularly focused upon maximising the social and economic benefits of research. Students will work together with others studying in their discipline from across Yorkshire and have numerous opportunities to develop their interdisciplinary networks and expertise.
Funding
This fully-funded 3-year scholarship will cover maintenance and fees for UK candidates, or fees only for EU candidates, starting from Autumn 2012.
Eligibility
The competition is open to UK and EU students who have completed (or expect to complete by the end of the current academic year) a Masters or BA qualification in Education or in a related discipline such as Linguistics, Psychology, Sociology.
Applications
The deadline for applications for this studentship will be 3 February 2012. Candidates should apply for a PhD following the instructions on our departmental website: http://www.york.ac.uk/education/postgraduate/mphil-phd, including a research proposal, and specifying that they are applying for the ESRC studentship. Candidates should both (1) apply to and be accepted on the programme and (2) submit an ESRC scholarship application form BY 3rd FEBRUARY. Late applications will not be considered. It is therefore necessary that candidates apply as early as possible.
