The Department is among the three largest Statistics groups in the UK with more than 30 academic members of staff. Research in the Department is organised into six themes (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/statistics/research): Biostatistics; Computational Statistics; Economics, Finance and Business; Environmental Statistics; General Theory and Methodology; Multivariate and High Dimensional Data. Research often cuts across these areas. Much of the research is interdisciplinary and involves collaborations within and outside UCL.
Deadline for Applications: 22 January 2024
Applications are invited for up to 5 PhD Studentships based at the Department of Statistical Science, UCL. The position can involve any topic within the Statistical Science remit.
The positions available are:
• Up to 4 Departmentally-funded Teaching Assistantships - Starting date in September 2024
• 1 Studentship funded by the Heilbronn Institute (https://heilbronn.ac.uk/about/postgrad-students/) - Starting date in September 2024
Important information:
• The 1 Studentship provided by the Heilbronn Institute is open to both Home and International applicants. In the case that an International candidate is selected by our Department, the allocation of the Studentship must be approved by the Heilbronn Institute due to a quota that the Institute places on the number of International candidates it can fund.
• The Teaching Assistantships (TAs) provided by our Department are open to both Home and International applicants. Our Department has put aside a fixed amount of funds for all the TAs. The exact number of TA Studentships that will be allocated will depend on the Fee Status of the successful applicants.
Each Teaching Assistantship will be 3.5 years in duration (or 6 years for part-time students) and will cover the full tuition fees, an annual maintenance stipend of £22,181 for 2024/25 (with some rise applied in subsequent years) and an allowance for research training. Full-time students will spend 6 months of their time teaching (spread across the 3.5 years) and devote the remainder to undertaking their research.
The Heilbronn Studentship will be 4 years in duration (or 6 years for part-time candidates) and will cover the full tuition fees, an annual maintenance stipend of £22,181 for 2024/25 (with some rise applied in subsequent years) and an allowance for research training.
The requirement for admission to the MPhil/PhD in Statistical Science is a 1st class or high upper 2nd class Bachelor’s degree, or a Master’s degree with merit or distinction, in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline. International qualifications of an equivalent standard are also acceptable. Further details can be found on the Departmental website (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/statistics/prospective-postgraduates/phd).
The requirements for appointment as a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant – relevant in particular for the Teaching Assistantships – are detailed in the PGTA person specification (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/statistics/sites/statistics/files/pgta_person_specification.pdf).
How to apply
A single application procedure covers both types of Studentships (Teaching Assistantships and Heilbronn Studentship). A candidate can select one or both types of Studentships to be considered for when completing the funding application form. The link to the funding application form can be found below
Candidates will need to identify and be in contact with a prospective supervisor in the department (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/statistics/prospective-postgraduates/phd) in advance of submitting an application.
