The section of epidemiology is committed to advancing One Health through teaching and research. We are partner in a multi-national project "Decentralising and operationalising One Health platforms" in Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The project is funded for three years by the Canadian International Research and Development Center (IDRC), and led by scientists in Guinea, DRC and Canada.
The objectives are
(1) to map the stakeholders of One Health, clarify their roles and responsibilities, endorse and coordinate their activities
(2) analyse causes and consequences of emerging infectious diseases on gender and vulnerable groups
(3) develop and reinforce surveillance, information and risk communication systems appropriate for the contexts and target audiences; and
(4) reinforce multidisciplinary research mechanisms for emerging infectious diseases.
Your responsibilities
Your task will be to evaluate the knowledge integration at the level of the One Health field units as well as at the level of the national governance structures endorsing those units. You will apply to this context an evaluation framework that was developed by a European research consortium under the leadership of our group. A central tool is a questionnaire which will be applied at the start and the end of the project to assess the achieved change.
You will follow the structured PhD program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, which is a PhD program of the Life Science Zurich Graduate School . You also be a PhD scholar of the Swiss Learning Health System, an interuniversity program supported by the SBFI .
The PhD study usually takes 3 to 4 years to complete. The goal of the program is to train PhD students both as content experts for specific topics and as methodologists with specialized skills in designing, conducting and analyzing studies in a biomedical research context. Students acquire core competencies either in epidemiology or in biostatistics, and competencies specific to the respective field of research.
Your profile
Applicants should hold a master's degree (MSc) in epidemiology, biostatistics, medicine, biomedicine or another academic discipline suitable for the given topic, and acceptance to the PhD program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
We require excellent quantitative skills with a focus on methodology, suitable medical or epidemiological background knowledge and an interest and ability to rapidly acquire new analytical methods. Proficiency in English and French is required.
The research context will require a collaborative and resilient personality, capable of taking decisions independently while maintaining scientific rigour. You will have to acknowledge a variety of perspectives and integrate them constructively, and still respect people's autonomy and the objectives imposed by the project. This requires an exceptional emotional and communication competence. The realisation of the project within the time limits will require good organisational skills.
What we offer
The project will allow exchange and networking with leading international experts in One Health. The research will provide lots of opportunities to travel in Guinea and the DR Congo. In Zurich, we offer interesting and challenging research in an inspiring intellectual and social environment with collaborators and PhD students from a multinational community.
Place of work
Winterthurerstrasse 270, Zürich, Switzerland
Start of employment
The employment will start in September or by agreement. Please submit your application by 01.07.2022 via the link to the online application tool only.
