The Programming Group at the School of Computer Science, University of St.Gallen (HSG), Switzerland, invites applications for an opening as PhD student. 


The Programming Group (https://programming-group.com/) is doing research on several topics at the intersection of programming languages and software engineering such as:

- Programming languages for distributed systems (e.g., multitier programming and reactive programming)

- Software quality and testing (e.g., for infrastructure as code)

- Software verification (e.g., for replicated data structures in local-first software)

- AI for software development (e.g., the impact of LLMs on software practice)


We focus on impactful research and regularly publish in top international conferences and journals in Programming Languages and Software Engineering (https://programming-group.com/publications).


Employment: full-time (100%), the position is fully funded.

The position is supervised by Prof. Guido Salvaneschi


Your tasks:

- Develop original research, including new theories and software prototypes to demonstrate the applicability of the achieved results

- Collaborate with colleagues contributing to the research projects currently running in the team

- Publish research results in high-quality scientific conferences/journal


Your profile:

- Master's degree in computer science or a closely related field

- Ability to design and implement software systems of significant complexity

- Solid understanding of fundamental topics in computer science. For example, programming languages, compilers, distributed systems, and theoretical computer science

- Like to read and write technical text in English
