| Description of the research project/area of research The Stem Cell Engineering lab at the Karolinska Institute aims to apply engineering approaches to hypothesis driven research in the fields of stem cell and cancer stem cell biology. The proper integration of micro environmental cues with cell intrinsic genetic and epigenetic programs regulates stem cell state and fate. Increased knowledge of these processes has the potential to give deeper knowledge in fundamental disease mechanisms as well as true control of stem cell maintenance and differentiation in vitro. The main activities of the postdoctoral researcher will be to develop neuronal differentiation of stem cells cultures, specifically evaluating effects of controlling the in vitro microenvironment in normal tissue culture and three dimensional (3D) culture. iPS cells derived from Alzheimer’s patients and healthy controls will be used as source of pluripotent cells. Various synthetic hydrogels will be evaluated for 3D cultures. Differentiated neurons will be subjected to functional assays related to Alzheimer’s disease. The stem cell engineering laboratory is headed by Ass. Prof. Ana I Teixeira and located at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB), Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. The research group is a member of the Network in Organic Bioelectronics (OBOE, funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research) and is associated with the Linné Center Developmental Biology for Regenerative Medicine (DBRM, funded by the Swedish Research Council). In this project we cooperate with the iPS facility of Karolinska Institute. |

| Qualifications of the applicant A scholarship for the pursuit of postdoctoral studies may be awarded to a person who comes from a country outside of Sweden, and whose intent is to stay in Sweden for his or her entire, or partial, postdoctoral education. The head of the department decides whether the applicant’s education and scientific qualifications will be regarded as equivalent to (or higher than) a Swedish doctorate. Scholarships may not be given to anyone who in the two years before the proposed award of the scholarship has received a salary or remuneration from Karolinska Institutet. We are looking for highly motivated, talented researchers that are enthusiastic about interdisciplinary research. To qualify applicants must hold a PhD, or a foreign qualification equivalent of a Swedish PhD degree. Applicants should have completed their degree within five years before the last date. Applicants must have a proven publication record (at least one first author paper). Candidates should have strong interest to develop new assay methods using differentiated stem cells to address disease related mechanisms. A background in stem cell biology, neuronal cell biology, or Alzheimer’s disease is suitable for this project. Experienced in 3D cultures and advanced imaging are valued. |
