| Description of the research project/area of research The research focus of the Jan-Åke Gustafsson group is nuclear receptors in health and disease. This project concerns the investigation of the effect of estrogen receptor beta on expression of components of intracellular signaling pathways and their activity, this in relation to development of endocrine resistance in breast cancer cells. Tasks include planning and performing experiments related to the described project, teamwork with other researchers in the team and supervising of project students. The lab is located at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, Karolinska Institutet, (http://ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=229&l=en) which provides an excellent research infrastructure. The group is also part of the Center for Biosciences (http://ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=19502&l=en) and has an axis to the Center for Nuclear Receptors and Cell Signaling in Houston (http://cnrcs.uh.edu/). |

The head of the department decides whether the applicant’s education and scientific qualifications will be regarded as equivalent to (or higher than) a Swedish doctorate. Scholarships may not be given to anyone who in the two years before the proposed award of the scholarship has received a salary or remuneration from Karolinska Institutet. At Karolinska Institutet, scholarships may only be established for the education of the holder. Educational scholarships are restricted for postdoctoral studies lasting up to two years and exempted from Swedish income tax. A scholarship for the pursuit of postdoctoral studies may be awarded for up to two years in the five years following the public defence (or equivalent) of a doctoral thesis. The scholarship amount is approved for up to six months at a time and is paid monthly. Scope: 100% Time-period: 24 months, approved for up to six months at a time.
