PhD student, ICTPSI in Industrial Automation, TEMIEF00
Type of employment: Limit of tenure, 4-5 years
Extent: 100 %
Location: Department of Measurement Technology and Industrial Electrical Engineering, Lund
First day of employment: 2011-12-01
Official Records Number: LTHPA 2011/707
The research is directed towards methods to avoid large-scale power systems blackouts such as those that occurred in Sweden in 1983 and 2003. This is done through control of HVDC links, power plants and consumption based on data from PMU-s and other measurement systems. The work includes modelling and analysis of dynamics and stability of national power systems and also control system design.
The work is a part of the project ICT Platform for Sustainable Infrastructures which is financed by the Foundation for Strategic Research and has received attention in Swedish media (Ny Teknik: ?Ny reglerteknik ger s?krare n?t?). The project involves PhD students and senior researchers at Industrial Electrical Engineering and Automation (IEA) at LTH, Automatic Control at LTH and Automatic Control at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm). The motto of the project is ?Saving Southern Sweden from blackout? and the research results will be demonstrated using the power system simulator ARISTO at IEA.
The PhD student is appointed at IEA, LTH where he/she also spends up to 20 % of full time on teaching or other duties assigned by the department.
Eligibility/Entry Requirements
To qualify for admittance to the third cycle (doctoral) study programme in industrial automation the applicant must hold a Master of Science or equivalent second cycle degree. The curriculum must include second cycle courses in methods or applications relevant for industrial automation. Examples of methods are mathematical modelling, control theory, mathematical statistics and optimization, while application examples are production systems, electric power systems and water systems.
Exceptions from the requirements are decided by the board of LTH.
Applicants are prioritized after their judged ability to carry out the study programme. This includes:
Capability to work independently assessed through for example MSc project.
Knowledge and skills relevant for the research work.
Skills in written and oral communication. This is assessed based on documented oral presentations, reports and scientific papers. Also the ability to explain complex matters is assessed since this is important to research and teaching.
