Offer Description
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
We are looking for a doctoral student in mathematical statistics who will work under the supervision of Ottmar Cronie, on a project entitled “Marked point process learning with applications to modelling and forecasting of earthquakes and ambulance calls”. The prospective PhD student will be part of an inspiring research group with a friendly and supporting atmosphere as well as a solid network of international collaborators.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department has three scientific divisions: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics and conducts successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas. We have an international environment with frequent exchanges with other universities around the world. The department provides a friendly, creative, and supportive atmosphere with a steady flow of international guests. There are many committed teachers with extensive and broad experience of all aspects of higher education. More information about us can be found on our website: http://www.chalmers.se/math/
At the division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics we conduct research within the theory and implementation of finite element methods, inverse wave propagation problems, stochastic partial differential equations, geometric numerical integration, optimization, biomathematics, biostatistics, spatial modeling, Bayesian inference, high-dimensional data, large-scale computational methods, and bioinformatics. The division is also expanding in the area of data science and machine learning.
Our department continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all our activities. We work actively to be a parent-friendly organization.
Subject area
Applied Mathematics and Statistics
Specific subject description
A point process may be viewed as a generalized random sample, where we allow a random sample size and dependence between the random variables in the sample. Point processes can be used to model a range of naturally evolving phenomena, including earthquakes, trees and contagion. By attaching some further quantity, a so-called ‘mark’, to each sample point we obtain a framework in which we may handle regression/supervised learning in the context of generalized random sampling. The announced PhD position, which is carried out under the supervision of Ottmar Cronie and funded by the Swedish Research Council, focuses on the methodological development of a new statistical theory for marked point processes, which revolves around the paper:
Cronie, O., Moradi, M., & Biscio, C. A. (2023). A cross-validation-based statistical theory for point processes. Biometrika, asad041, https://doi.org/10.1093/biomet/asad041 .
The project contains more mathematically oriented parts as well as more applied statistical parts. Please motivate your interest in the project in your application letter.
Job assignments
You will be enrolled in a graduate program at the Department of Mathematical Sciences (https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/math/research/postgraduate-studi… ). During the second half of the PhD studies, you are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.
The employment is a fixed-term position limited to a maximum of five years, four years of studies and up to one year of departmental work distributed during the whole employment period.
Eligibility
The eligibility for academic positions is given in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance. To qualify for the position, the applicant must have obtained a Master’s degree or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical statistics, or another relevant field, or be expect to complete such a degree by September 1, 2024. Good presentation and communication skills in oral and written English are required.
A background in mathematical statistics/probability theory as well as experience from (measure theoretic) probability theory (in particular random measures/point processes), statistical inference, statistical/machine learning and good programming skills, e.g. through course work or a thesis, are considered meritorious.
Please include all relevant work, such as Bachelor's and Master's theses and articles (provide an English summary if necessary) which you have authored or co-authored.
Assessment
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in SFS 1998:80.
