Offer Description

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

Your work assignments

As a member of Nanostructured Materials, you will conduct application-inspired fundamental research on materials synthesis and behavior. The work is primarily experimental. This position is part of a large project developing protective coatings for nuclear fuel rods so you will be part of a collaborative research team. The team members are from academia and industrial companies. You will be part of one or several research subprojects, headed by a senior researcher and a steering group.

The position comprises experimental research in the field of synthesizing multicomponent thin films by pulsed arc deposition. The research task includes deposition process development and alloy engineering, thin film characterization by, for example, analytical electron microscopy and x-ray diffractometry, and determination of their mechanical and oxidation-resistant properties. The work is conducted in close collaboration with theoreticians.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in Materials Science, Physics, or a similar topic, or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Materials Science, Physics, or a similar topic. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

You have interests, and preferably documented experience, in thin film synthesis by physical vapor deposition.

You are self-motivated with a strong drive to excel in science. You are communicative, organized, and report your work efficiently.

You speak and write in English fluently.

You do not need to supply a letter of intent with your application.

Your workplace

The division of Nanostructured Materials at the Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education in Materials Science. You can read more about Nanostructured Materials here: https://liu.se/organisation/liu/ifm/nano .

The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date by agreement.
